Detailed Reviews
We stayed in Mintaro and had a short walk to this amazing pub. The extremely friendly owners and staff went above and beyond looking after their customers. They have all day dining and our meals were excellent. They have a lovely big garden area and there was great entertainment throughout the afternoon and early evening. They also have accommodation available, which the owner showed us and the three rooms available have been upgraded to a high standard, no old pub rooms here. The bathrooms were high spec too. Two rooms share one bathroom and the other room has an ensuite. Great for a small group staying together. Can highly recommend.

Needed accomodation at short notice and Clare tourist info said Magpie & Stump had a few rooms and may be able to help. We had been there previously for lunch 6 months prior and I thought the atmosphere was really good, so decided to book for the weekend. even though our room was small it had everything, and decor was new and fresh! double bed felt like it had a woollen underlay and was very comfy. Bar fridge, elec jug, toaster, plunger coffee etc - everything worked! we had dinner there both nights, schnitzel first night and grilled fish and osso bucco the second which neither of us could fault, Numerous times we were told Paul & Amanda have done an amazing job with the pub and brought it back from the brink of extinction. it had a real friendly and homely atmosphere that we love. We even met the pub cat (PC) who strolled in and out of our room at random! we had a shared bathroom but this wasnt a problem and it was renovated beautifully! we loved our stay and will definitely be back!

I had the beef burger and it was amazing and my mate said the chicken burger was the best she has ever had (and she will come back for another one from Qld). The beers are cold and fresh and there is a huge wine selection. Lunch til 3pm at this time of year (most kitchens appear to shut at 2pm). Thanks Magpie and Stump, you made our Clare valley trip!!!

Nestled in the small heritage town of Mintaro (1.5Hrs NE of Adelaide), on the fringe of the Clare Valley region lies this hidden gem, The Magpie & Stump.
I was staying in Mintaro for a weekend retreat away from the hustle & bustle of Adelaide when i first heard of this place.
Staying just down the road i decided to give it a go for dinner.
Inside has great atmosphere full of charm and the rich historic touches you'd expect to find from an 1851 established local watering hole.
I was greeted by the warm smiles of the owners Amanda and Paul as well as their gracious staff.
Plenty of options on the menu including Seafood, Indian and your usual pub fare but being a bit of a steak snob I opted for the latter.
The steak was cooked and seasoned to absolute perfection. Juicy and tender it just melted away with every bite. Unusually paired with a caesar salad it became the first time I've ever eaten all of my salad with dinner!
This quickly overtook my favourite steak (previously Rare Steakhouse Melbourne-500g Rib-Eye with danish blue cheese dressing.) to become number 1.
If your ever in the region be sure to add Mintaro and The Magpie & Stump to your list.
Thankyou Paul and Amanda for helping to make my Clare Valley experience one to remember.

A weekend visit to Martindale Hall took us to the hills. There aren't a great many food options but we found the local pub. It was a late lunch (3pm-ish) and we wandered inside to find maybe half of its tables occupied. An aged and sour looking woman accosted us and we said we'd like to grab lunch. She asked if we had a booking, which we didn't, and told us they were fairly busy. Now, neither my partner nor I wear glasses, and feel we have decent eyesight. We peered around the quaint little pub with its fireplace and saw perhaps less than half of the tables occupied. Unless Minarto tends to have a pub lunch rush in the late afternoon, we weren't sure why Jilly Rotten had been so cold and rude, and whether the owners of Minarto pub were flying so high that they didn't need the custom. Safe to say, we weren't that desperate to have salt n pepper squid (or any seafood for that matter), this far from the ocean. Avoid. This isn't what country hospitality is supposed to be about.

We stayed, with friends, overnight in Mintaro at the Magpie and Stump. The place was recommended by friends. The owners and staff went above and beyond looking after their customers, they are particularly friendly and charming. We stayed for the evening meal which had a wide choice, was excellent value and a great meal. Can recommend their house wines which, in our case were from grapes grown in the owners own vineyard. They have a large garden area and we enjoyed great entertainment, throughout the afternoon and evening. Not a lot of accommodation so book early to get in there. Would thoroughly recommend.

A beautiful place to stop, enjoy a beer and some quality pub food.
Gluten free burger was delicious and the staff seemed to understand requirements for coeliac.
Lots of kids running around in the garden, plenty of room to have fun.

The Magpie and Stump is a true Australian Pub experience. This historic hotel from 1851 in the beautiful Clare Valley has a great bar, beer garden and restaurant specialising in traditional pub food. The wine list features local Clare Valley wines, which you can enjoy by the glass. Live Saturday Jazz is also on the menu. A great place to spend an afternoon, meet some locals and emerce yourself in a true country pub experience which is hard to find. Staff were really helpful, food was great.

Visited this pub for dinner while on overnight road trip to the mid north. Quaint old building with some original internal features including the old wood fired bakery oven in the dining room. Had the traditional chicken schnitzel with pepper sauce. Nice size serve with chips and salad. Was a cold rainy night, wood fires and friendly staff and locals. Highly recommended.

Great little country pub, excellent food and a good range of beers and wines. I ha the schnitzel and couldn’t eat it all. Outstanding value for money. Open fires in bars and dining room was an added bonus. Service was very good. Highly recommend
