Thendele camp is a tenure camp in the middle of Royal Natal Drakensbergen. The chalets are spacious and clean but slightly outdated. However the magnificent views compensate for the interior. Waking up with a view on the mountains is breathtaking. The hikes are well marked and vary in length. The views are spectacular independent of the route. You should bring your own food, but the kitchen is wel-equiped and of course there is a braai. You should also bring firewood, there is a fireplace in the house and especially in winter/ spring you will need it.....

I spent three nights in this camp overlooking the beautiful Amphitheatre. Our chalet in the Upper Camp was quite old, but had enough space and a stunning view. Braai facility was broken and instead of it there was a very small one, difficult to use. They need to upgrade and refurbish the chalets. The shop is stocked with some basic food, so if you have to stay a few days it is better to do the shopping before going to the park. It’s necessary to be careful because baboons are around the camp and can enter the chalets! They even steal firelighter (it happened to our neighbours). The chalet and the chalet maintenance worths a score of 3, but because of the fantastic view of the Amphitheatre from our windows I rate the camp 4.

It's a long drive in and then up to the lodges but then you look around and you are right in the middle of the Drakensburg mountains. Our lodge was perfectly adequate with a spectacular view from the lounge, the terrace and the bedroom. Antelope around the lodges and baboon too. The walking here is really good. We walked up the gorge and to tiger falls. There are very small shops with the basics at the Park reception and Thendele's own reception but bring everything you need with you to be sure.

We staid in the camp for three days and we really loved it. After flying in from Europe to Durban it was our first place we staid in for our 2 week holiday and it is the perfect place to disconnect, no wifi, no 4G …. focus on nature and your own. When the night falls, you hear NOTHING from the civilised world and the camp is the perfect place for nice walks. The nice thing is that you can do the walks on your own, no need of a guide etc…. If you, make sure to buy your food before getting there as there is only very basic stuff in the camp. Each bungalo has facilities to do your own « braai » The bungalo are very basic and a bit rusty, but hey that is not why you come here

I just love Thendele. It can almost do no wrong given where it is sited. The view from our house was as fine a view as you could probably find in the world. The Amphitheatre spread across in all its grandeur as we braaied behind the house. Fabulous walks into the Thukela Gorge, swimming in the river, and showering under waterfalls.

We stayed her a few times over the years. This time we booked a chalet in the upper camp. The view of the Amphitheatre is stunning! The chalet is well equipped and clean. It was serviced daily. We did the gorge walk, but not to the end, as the heavy rains washed away the path. We enjoyed the walk to the Tiger fall and look-out rock. We will be back!

We stayed in Upper Thendele which has beautiful views of the Ampitheatre. The chalet was well equipped and the layout comfortable. Certain areas had not been cleaned as well as another unit that friends stayed in. Perfect base for mountain walks.

The views are amazing and the facilities of the houses are basic. The bathrooms need an upgrade desperately for the price that is charged. The lounge furniture could also do with recovering. But all in all, all that is needed is there. Hot water, comfortable beds, equipped kitchen and basic braai and fire place. Our unit was 25 although I would have preferred 27 or 19 but when I asked fir them I was told they were booked. Actually they weren’t booked but because we arrived on a Sunday, and guests were leaving from those units on the Sunday morning, no one was going to clean them and get them ready for us. So don’t arrive on a Sunday if you want a particular unit because in all likelihood, you’ll be told not available as the weekend is always full!
