Decent economy room on Munras Ave. No breakfast. Good size room with work desk. Everything worked well. Staff not exactly charming. Across the street from Del Monte shopping center where their are several eating choices. Over the years I've stayed in most of the motels along this road and this one is no better or worse than the others.

Near restaurants and very clean rooms. Kind of a mom and pop management, they were very nice. If coming from HWY , take a u turn at the entrance to the Mall. Legal! No refrigerator or microwave is only drawback.

My wife and I ended up here after our confirmation at an overbooked hotel nearby was mishandled. We ended up with the very last room at check-in, room 219, which later turned out to have bedbugs. We now suspect that this is why the room was the last one given to guests. The façade of this place is as well-kept as possible, with a fresh coat of paint and flowers in full bloom. Room was tidy but foul-smelling. Runs for under $70 on a normal weekend but we paid nearly $400 out of desperation of having nowhere else to stay. My wife, who is visibly pregnant with twins, was awoken at 1:30 AM with an itching sensation on her wrist. I quickly found a bed bug skittering away after flicking on the lights and pulling the sheets back. We immediately decided to report the issue to the manager, request a refund, fuel up on coffee, hit the road and abort our weekend trip. The manager refused to refund us for the price of the room, even when shown the video evidence and the bloody bed bug carcass. He accused us of not trying hard enough to look for more bugs and eliminate them. He patronized my wife, who is allergic to insect bites and whose arm was beginning to swell, by asking her why she had not attempted to call a doctor. He insisted that a refund was not necessary because a maid had already ‘cleaned the room’ the day before as a matter of routine. After we continued to insist that we receive a refund so that we could leave and be on our way, he informed us that the matter could not be resolved until the police arrived, whom he had claimed to call, and until he was able to reach the health department, whom he also claimed to call (at 2 AM on a Sunday morning!) As expected, no police arrived after an hour of arguing, and the manager just stood there smugly recording us on his phone while we contacted our bank to initiate a charge dispute.

Response from CARMELHILLLODGE, General Manager at Rodeway Inn near Downtown Monterey
Responded Sep 4, 2019
In general, if guest has complained about issues then guest explains the issue to sort out things, but when you called at around 2 am in the morning your call was brief saying you found bedbugs and we want our refund. In normal condition guest would complain and would ask if we can provide them with different room or sort out the issue. Your assumption of last room is not correct as we had left with few rooms after your reservation over the phone at around 5.21 pm and check-in at 5.35 pm. Your suspicion about last room and bedbugs is not valid. We were renting out every day your same room number 219 rented throughout busy summer season and matter of fact we rented out again next day on Oct-1st without any complaint from the new guest about any issues. When you called at around 1.30 am, our desk clerk immediately responded to your call rushing to your room to find if any issues. While looking at bed or sheets we both didn’t find any bedbugs except you were showing video with bedbugs. Your wife was trying to show itching sensation on her right-hand wrist, which was not very visible to our desk clerk, but still offered to call doctor. In our desk clerk customer service option to call doctor or health department was to help resolve the issue and no way related to refund as your check-in time was 5.35 pm which is more than 8 hours of full stay. Since you kept requesting only about refund and not any other available options, our desk clerk decided to call police at around 2.10 am. Police had taken our request by asking name of the guest and informing that it may be while before Police will show-up. Police mentioned that this may be civil issue, but upon our insistence to witness that there were no bedbugs in the room, police department arranged dispatch. You many call Monterey Police department to find out and make sure that our staff was not lying. You were busy calling your bank and at the same time, our staff was waiting for police to arrive and he decided to witness with your live video recording of our conversation. You finally decided to check out at 2.50 am handing over keys to our staff knowing that police are already on their way. You decided to leave knowing that we didn’t approved refund based on above facts. I hope this is our honest reply to issues happened while your stay at our motel and we apologize for any inconvenience during your stay.

Stayed here the night after attending the U.S. Open Friday session. Because of the Open, the price was absurdly high, but we wanted to stay in or near Monterey so we could continue our trip down the coast during daylight the next day, and this was one of the less-ridiculously-priced places still available when we started looking (if you consider $500 for a $50 hotel less ridiculous). Passed a lot of hotels on the way to this one that looked a little nicer, but they must not have had availability when I was looking, or were even higher priced. Anyway, this is a Motel with a capital 'M.' Floors were tile, so the room didn't feel cozy at all, and the huge king-sized mattress actually had springs sticking up on one side. Fortunately, the mattress was big enough to avoid having to sleep on them. They served some sort of breakfast in a tiny room by the check-in desk, but I looked in in the morning, and didn't see anything to eat, so we dined elsewhere. Overall, this just felt like a 'dive' motel, and I think there are much better choices in the area. On the plus side, we did find a nice place to dine for dinner at the mall across the street. Can't recall the name of the place, but it was at the far end of the outdoor mall, and is not a chain, as far as we know.

The property is clean and renovated and is a good value for the price. They position themselves as a four-star hotel. But they are not. You will not find anything you expect to find in a four-star hotel like slippers or bathrobe. The water pressure in the shower is so low it is very hard to take a normal shower, you have to catch every drop. Their bath towels are small and cheap and you need at least two after the shower. They advertise themselves as "free breakfast included". However, the breakfast is non-existent. coffee, juice and a cookie from Costco is all you get. To be fair, for the price I got it it is still a very good deal even considering all of the above.

This is my second stay at this hotel - last year, it seemed fine - I don't remember being unable to sleep. The hotel was convenient to my destination as I came without a car - on the hill, not on the water. Close to Whole Foods and the mall. But, they charged more than double and a half the regular price (via Hotel.com) for a stay on Thanksgiving. Had no choice, just had to pay it. Positives: The room is large, clean, hard pillows (found some softer ones the next day). Small refrigerator in the room. Parking if you need it. There is a little room near the reception with coffee and cookies at breakfast. Negative: Perhaps because of the age of the building and nothing done to deal with sound, the people upstairs from me ruined my sleep. They were playing their TV on some of kind of gaming, so loud and there was a sort of echo throughout my room. Prior to that lots of loud music. This continued all night until about 5:20 am. No-one was at reception to ask. I started yelling "Please turn it down" - nothing happened. Then, lots of commotion and noise about 6:30 - which I think was the cleaning crew and someone trying to get into my room (before checkout, about 9). Bring earplugs or sound canceling headphones. I guess you should ask to stay where no-one is upstairs or possibly stay upstairs. And maybe avoid rooms 121 or 123 if you need to sleep a bit in the morning because they are next to the laundry room used by the staff.

Clean and tidy, perfect for our four-day stay in Monterey. It’s about half an hour’s walk into Monterey itself and Carmel is a short drive away on the other side. Happy to recommend and would stay there again. Enjoyed the free breakfast & the shopping centre opposite is good to visit.
