The hotel is very central situated just a couple of minutes from the main centre. The gentleman on reception was very helpful with securing our car and helping with luggage. He showed us to a room which situated at the back of a small pool area, it didn’t match what I had been expecting but thought I maybe I was mistaken. We arrived late in the afternoon and had been driving some time so needed to stretch our legs and get some fresh air and therefore headed straight out. While we were out I checked my booking confirmation and the room did not match the description or pictures. However we arrived back around 9pm to darkness due to load shedding (no sign or information this was due to happen) They do have a generator but for lighting in the rooms only. The reception also closes down at 9pm. When we started to unpack a few things I then realised none of the windows opened and all covered by curtains as outside were walls etc. We could then hear someone in the room above going to the toilet. It was an uncomfortable night with lighting and someone’s mobile vibrating on the floor above. We went to breakfast which had a good selection of fresh fruits, yogurts and cereals. The cooked breakfast was ok not exceptional We didn’t see any other guests. I spoke to the same man at reception and said the room we had been given didn’t match photos and descriptions I had on my booking. He stated the booking system is automated and he would not have allocated and they were fully booked. I told about the noise from above and the room had no windows which were not completely covered, I felt I was in a converted garage. He said he would speak to the director. There was a woman who appeared now and again but seemed to avoid guests. As we were heading out for a wine tour he told us we would be moved. On our return the room we were shown to fitted the description and photos on my confirmation. It was a much nicer room with balcony and overlooked the pool with windows that could be opened. We left the next day again we saw no one at breakfast. The hotel is quirky and decorated in a old colonial style. It is a nice street and looks lovely from the outside. It was a strange experience and I was very annoyed that we had to challenge to have the room we booked and paid for, this was supposed be 5 star and it was not and I will contact our booking agent to seek compensation for the 1st night stay. Stellenbosch is so beautiful and this strange experience tainted our stay.

Excellent location, walking distance to central Stellenbosch. Lovely light & airy rooms, and comfy communal lounge area. Good coffee in the room and in the lounge. Great breakfast. Excellent staff. Our usual go-to b&b closed after Covid but now we’ve found our new spot.

Room was average: old fashioned. We had expected more modern and luxury room regarding to the price for the room we had to pay … location is super, staf is super friendly, but the overall impression of the hotel is average.

We had a really wonderful stay in this lovely family hotel.....it has a unique style: old/antique furniture combined with modern and fully renovated bath rooms f.ex......it is only 5min or less to walk to the center...it is a very save area.....the stuff and the owner were always available and helped with any questions we had....we would definitely stay here again when we come back to Stelenbosch.

Best hotel we stayed at in the cape town area. Great launching point to explore the wine regions as well as the cape. Only 25 minutes from the airport!!! Less than two minute walk from everything Stellenbosch nightlife has to offer.

This hotel is in a superb location just a block from the heart of old Stellenbosch. The owners who seem to be a faceless conglomerate, don't care about their clientele and customer service. It is run on a shoe-string budget. The sparse, poorly trained staff never seem to be there. When they were there, they seemed to be always bickering. The breakfasts were of mediocre quality made by a untrained cook. The rooms are "tired" with a book of rules, (more like threats) about their antique furniture. It was reallya "self-serve" establishment. Very disappointing because Stellenbosch was not.

We are quite mystified by the wonderful reviews for this hotel. We had reserved a 'Superior Double' - shown as having a king bed - through Hotels.com. When we arrived however, we were shown to a room that bore no resemblance to what we had booked. The actual bedroom was on a mezzanine level up an odd metal staircase leading from a kitchen area that formed part of the room and the wardrobe was in the bathroom. Initially we didn't want to make a fuss, but the longer we spent trying to decide what to do, the more uncomfortable we felt and realised we just couldn't sleep in that room. When we went to speak to him, the duty manager - who was consistently very pleasant and polite - insisted the booking he had received (from Expedia) had come through for that specific room, despite us showing him it was not what our booking confirmation indicated. After much back and forth he eventually agreed to move us to a twin room, which we could have booked the previous day and which was much more like what we expected. The weird thing is, the room to which we were initially allocated is described on the hotel's own website as a 'loft-style self-catering unit' - not as a Superior Double so I'm not sure how it could be sold as that. The hotel is located very centrally for Stellenbosch and is within easy walking distance of the centre. At breakfast it seemed odd there were not enough tables for all guests to sit inside. We ate outside which was fine but I'm not sure how they manage in inclement weather. Coffee - served in small bone china cups - was cold within a few minutes of it being served, there were no pastries other than a couple of small muffins, no labels on anything and both the glassware and crockery were mismatched 'olde worlde' style, which we found a bit kitsch. It's almost like the Batavia is trying to be something it just isn't - and sadly it definitely wasn't a 5 star experience.
