Shingwedzi lies in the northern part of the Kruger National Park in the heart of Mopane country. A scenic game drive along the Shingwedzi River in a southeasterly direction towards the Kanniedood Dam is one of the most rewarding drives in the Park. Waterbuck, nyala, kudu and elephant are often seen here and the bird life is prolific. Staying overnight at Shingwedzi is an experience that will last a lifetime. It is a rustic camp that still carries the essence of the bush and is untouched by modern technology. Experience magical evenings where the accommodation is arranged in two separate circles and the glow emanating from braai (barbecue) stands cast a tranquil spell.
This is the third time we have stayed at this camp and being further from the entrance gates tends to be quieter. The cottage was clean, comfortable , well equipped ( for the Kruger ) and plenty of outside space. They have also managed to move on the Baboons and monkeys, much better. Probably only negative is the shop, quite small, limited selection food as lots space taken up with tourist tat.

The camp grounds are located so that there are views all around the fence. Staff is very friendly. Bathrooms are kept clean. Laundry room and wash up areas available. The game viewing is also great. it must be the most elephants I have seen in my life

The rooms are clean BUT there are no peace and quiet in the camp. Pickup trucks drive 100cm from your doorstep, staff shouting 200 meter away from each other. Staff are unfriendly and don't like being asked anything! They are to busy having the time of their lives!

This is the third year that we find part of the reception and restaurant area cordoned off with green sails and notices about repairs under way. We stayed in the Rentmeester guesthouse ,and not only was the "system"down so check inn was an hour long procedure, but the ladies gave us the wrong keys. The kitchen sink was leaking and blobs of silicone made an impression of careless maintenance.

All main camps have generators for the load shedding issue in South Africa except this camp With extreme hot conditions it is no pleasure to stay at this camp. Game viewing is excellent but camp management is poor. The restaurant is in a bad state- no aircon and no outside facilities with a roof to enjoy your meal. The menu has limited options and no vegetables. The shop has limited groceries. Not recommended to stay more than 2 nights

A large camp, with many chalets and a large camp site. Book camping with or without perimeter view. If you love elephants and large tree, this camp is perfect for self-drive. The north of the Kruger is not as busy as the touristy south, but there are less predators to be seen. The camp has a self service laundry room, electricity, game drives, a small restaurant and well stocked shop.

This was our first time staying at Shingwedzi although we had stopped in for coffee on previous visits to the park. We stayed here for 4 nights in a BD2 bungalow, number B54. The "bungalow" was semi detached but we didn't hear any noise from our neighbours, to the rear was the camping area but as it wasn't busy with campers it was quiet. I'm not sure how it might be at busy times though? B54 was spacious, clean and had all the usual utensils and equipment. The fridge freezer was inside, the rest of the kitchen was on the large stoep outside along with a large dining table and chairs. The shower was huge with lots of hot water. The accommodation here at Shingwedzi was probably one of our favourites during our 3 week stay in Kruger. The housekeeping lady even did a bit of bedding art and put some greenery in a vase which was really sweet. The shop was well stocked with all the basics etc. Staff were fine. The grounds were maintained well. The area around Shingwedzi is stunning, Redrocks is worth a visit and just happens to be the only place we saw Leopard in the 3 weeks we were in the park. The plus there is that we had the sighting to ourselves for a long time. The only minus point was that there was a strong smell of bats at the accommodation but we did get used to it after a day ot 2. They roost in the thatch over hanging the stoep so you can see bat urine on the wall and also their droppings on the floor. It certainly wouldn't stop us going there and after all you are in their backyard so to speak. We are already planning another trip to Kruger and Shingwedzi will be on our list for sure.…

Unit 26: beds comfy, utensils clean but old though functioning (just), shower curtain clean, airco works and not too noisy. Camp Location is excellent, camp generally clean, staff polite, accommodation typical of 1970’s Sanparks though functional and clean. Pool is lovely, reasonably clean and very warm. Night drive with “Promise” was great, even if we didn’t see any of the biggies.

Shingwedzi is an older KNP Rest Camp and retains its charm and position on the river. Big room with 3 beds and one against the wall. Standard KNP room amenities - braai, microwave, fridge, crockery etc. Restaurant now a SANParks operation and it closes at 7pm. Was full for lunch but empty at dinner - we ordered take ways and reheated at room a bit later - so nice having a drink overlooking the river while it was being made. Menu small but food fine. River had little water - Kaniedood Dam seems to be empty. Sabi star flowers as good as ever.

The chalets were nice and modern, with sliding patio doors and lots of light. The kitchens are situated on the patio, so you need to be careful of the cheeky monkeys. We were very lucky to come across a fresh lion kill of a giraffe only 1 km outside the gate and could spend the next 2 days watching the lions and other preditors coming and going from the carcass - a real treat.
