Orpen Rest Camp is situated centrally on the western border of the Kruger National Park. It is a small camp that derived its name from the surname of the donor of the land, Eileen Orpen. The scattered trees and wide-open plains covered by sweet grass attract many browsers. This in turn, attracts the eye-catching cheetah, lion and leopard. Well known for its diversity of habitat and wildlife, Orpen offers visitors an excellent opportunity to experience close encounters with elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion and leopard in a natural environment. Wild dog, cheetah, zebra and giraffe are also indigenous to this area, a paradise for the wildlife enthusiast.

We had booked to stay at Satara Rest Camp for 3 nights; however our flight from the UK was delayed, so we only got to Orpen Gate, just as it was closing for the day. Satara was another 90 minutes away and the two lovely ladies at Orpen Gate reception were able to find us an empty lodge to stay there for the night, before going to Satara the next day. We really appreciate that they went above and beyond to help us.

Visited Orpen Camp from 11-17 Sept 2022 & must say its an improvement from when we visited in Aug 2021. Firstly I raised a concern about the bushes blocking the view of the watering hole a few weeks before arriving & Paul , camp Mngr arranged that the Rangers clear the bushes & we ended up having some great sitings. Still the best watering hole viewing in my opinion as you can see it from almost all the Chalets. The reception staff Wendy & her colleagues were always friendly throughout our stay & Orpen probably has the best Reception area , much more stylish/modern than the other typical SANPARKS reception areas we visited & makes a welcome change . The ladies in the shop were always smiling & friendly & all basic needs are taken care of. The gardens were also kept very neat & clean by Clement & he was making a real effort to create something special & doing it with love & care . Our Chalet was cleaned every day by Lynette , dishes washed & towels replaced etc . Always lovely coming home to a nice clean Chalet after a long day of game viewing. Sophiso was also always checking in on us whenever we bumped into him in the camp or he popped around a few times between his duties looking after other Camps nearby. Orpen is a small Camp but as mentioned has the best views of a watering hole whether sitting on the patio or while braaiing & you can't beat an African evening with a fire in the bush. There are some local bush buck residents roaming the Camp & at night the honey badger pays a regular visit , so keep those bins inside or on top of the kitchen cupboards . Please do not feed any wild animals as its like signing their death warrants , sadly some guests thought it was amusing watching the badger scratching in the bin but my friend took them to task. What was also great during our visit , was even with loadshedding , the Camp had a generator , only the cellphone reception was impacted. Could still use the stove , make coffee , shower etc Based on our visit last year quite a few things have improved at Orpen hence the 5 stars. The friendly helpful staff certainly played a big part in making this visit a great experience and we'll be back in 11 days time to visit again and stay in another Camp .

We stayed here in 2020 and returned two years later. We have visited 5 Rest Camps in Kruger during these two visits and this is by far our favorite. It is small and quiet. The bungalows are spacious and comfortable. The staff people were all friendly and efficient. The guide Octavia was top notch. We had her for a bush walk in 2020 and again for an evening drive in 2022. We viewed elephants from our porch, and various other wildlife from the swimming pool. Orpen also happened to be a lion hot spot this visit. The only drawback is the lack of a restaurant but we found the self catering facilities better than adequate.

We were here one night 2019 and returned now for two. There is a shop and café, but no restaurant so own braai was a must. Waterhole is star of this camp. Animals thru the day and night. Hopefully they will little cut some bushes, as visibility was 2019 better. Morning drive was nice experience, we learned lot more. Despite not seeing any exceptional animals. Reception had unfortunately given us wrong start time (30min too late), but luckily driver Octavia (sorry, if wrong spelling) came to check why we were not there at 0445. We were also lucky to have some nice cottage neighbors from Gauteng and Canada for cheering evening conversation. Also very nice laundry service was arranged, we were very happy

We spent 1 night on 9 Aug 2021 at Orpen Camp . Check in was quick & easy. Stayed in bungalow 11 , room a bit small but a big patio which does not make much sense. Finishes more modern than Satara Camp . Rooms are very basic and as its a small camp you are close to the shop , reception , laundrette & swimming pool which was much needed as it was 35 degrees celsius and its winter. The watering hole was not easily visible as there are a few bushes blocking the view & just a bit of effort will make this a great viewing hole. Did see a few hyenas and zebra visit . All the basic requirements like crockery , cutlery , towels , soap was provided . Rooms had a fan and aircon. Quite a few hornbills , honeybadgers and resident bush buck frequent the camp. Satara Camp is just over 1 hour away with a few viewing points along the way. Most roads are tarred & even gravel roads are easily accessible with a normal car , although height of a SUV or 4x4 always advantageous for game viewing

No Covid-19 Screening done on arrival. Fridge/Freezer not switched on for arrival, outside cupboard handles broken. Thatch roof was shabby and needs repairs. Enquired about cell phone having no signal and was told it was an Eskom problem and had been like like for 2 days already. Asked about load shedding and was assured a generator was in place so we would not be without power or Air Conditioner never the less Generator was switched off between 00:00 and 04:00

We just loved this tiny camp. A few units. Quiet. Waterhole right in front of you. What more can i say: ...... our new favourite camp in the Kruger!!! The wide variety of animals is great and the riverbed nearby provides lions etc.

We spent just one night here due to time constraints but thoroughly enjoyed it. Nice room, clean if a little cramped, but with good outdoor self catering facilities. Great night time mammal watching opportunities, with Honey Badger and Large-spotted Genet regularly visiting at the time of our visit.

A good place to stay if you need to exit or enter the park close to opening or closing times. There is a good waterhole right outside the camp with good sitings. There is a small shop for essential items at the camp but no restaurant. Staff are very pleasant.
