I stayed at this "resort and spa" a week ago when I was visiting Jo'burg. I was traveling as a single women and wanted to stay somewhere I thought was safe. I got there and noticed that I was one of the only foreigners in this isolated area with little to no security. The restaurant was not opened and there certainly was no spa either. I had no ride out of this place and had already paid 300 rand to get there so I decided to stay. After about an hour I noticed a man trying to come into my room. It scared me and I had to look everywhere for any staff members to talk to: they were busy partying and doing witchcraft! They assured me all was fine and that this was a safe place. Not too long after that a HUGE fight broke out between staff and guests. I could see into the office from my chalet: a full out brawl was going on and only stopped by gun shots. Needless to say, I left the hotel immediatly. The staff tried to reassure me that "this is how they handle things in South Africa" and that "this was the safest place in Jo'burg", but I had enough! Please think twice about staying in this hotel!

the inchange is very cheap and i can see why some could find it charming -- but our stay was peppered with problems and i would advise anyone considering staying there to ensure that you are aware of the potential issues. we booked months in advance and luckily had a print out of our reservation, as we when we arrived there was no record of our booking but the inchanga was fully booked. realising we were in a bind given that it was late at night and we had just arrived from the airport, the front desk clerk simply erased someone else's booking and substituted us in. (i wonder if that's how we originally lost our booking?) the place had ZERO security (i.e., no gates, no guards, nothing), which having spent some time in the norther suburbs in joburg can be a big issue. we did have an armed response unit button by our bed, but if the service we had received on other matters from the hotel (food deliveries and car pickups taking 4 hours because the clerk forgot to place the call) was anything to go by, then these buttons offered little comfort. to be fair, all the front desk staff were friendly. our chalet had intermittently functioning heaters at best, and the glass sliding doors were falling off their tracks, so we could not even shut our door properly. we didn't have a car as we were meeting up with a group of friends a few days later. the restaurant was closed and walking to fourways shopping mall or any other eating establishments was highly advised against by the front desk staff, even during the day in groups. the car service prices were not as advertised on signs in the main building and the drivers the clerks suggested were all charging an arm and a leg. we ended up leaving the next day to go to the backpackers ritz, which for all its faults (loud and not so clean) is a heck of a lot safer and more convenient. also the staff at the ritz were much more helpful with just about everything, even though again the inchanga staff were admittedly friendly. if you are lucky and get a room that actually shuts and has appliances that work, and you are not concerned about your safety and have your own mode of transport, then the inchanga is certainly a cheap option and located in a convenient area. there are so many other places to stay that are so much better, and i would highly recommend a boutique hotel (if you can afford to pay more) or a number of other hostels (if you can't), which would be much better options all around.
