Travelers' Choice
Tortilis Camp has a prime location for witnessing the majesty of Africa’s highest mountain, Kilimanjaro. The camp is named after the flat-topped, umbrella thorn tree, the Acacia Tortilis, and embraces a hill in one of Amboseli’s areas of Acacia Tortilis woodland. Located in a private conservancy bordering the national park, game drives, walks, sundowners and bush meals take place both inside the national park and in the conservancy, where guests enjoy exclusivity. The tents are all spacious, with king or twin beds and elegant en suite bathrooms. There is a main lounge, bar and dining area, all exquisitely built with natural materials and thatched roofs, with magnificent views of Kilimanjaro. The Private House and Family Tent are located slightly separate to the main camp, upon the hill where they share a pool and enjoy magnificent views of Kilimanjaro. Tortilis Camp was one of the first eco-lodges of its size, and is very proudly 100% solar. Guests can rest assure they are leaving a minimal footprint during their stay.

We stayed at Tortilis Camp in February and .....it was AMAZING !!! We spent 2 nights in the Family Tent (which included our own pool) - the rooms were simply excellent and immaculately clean. Great touches including water coolers in each room. The views of Kilimanjaro from the tents were just incredible. We had a great guide during our stay and loved the bush breakfast that was arranged - this is a must for anyone going. We expected a simple breakfast - not the champagne/orange juice and omelette station that was set up for us in the middle of the park. Just incredible. All the staff were excellent and our hosts (Graeme and Candy) were amazing. Thank you.

The best feature about Elewana Tortilis is its location (although it has many great attributes.) It is the only property that has a lease within the conservancy, so has exclusive access to much of the Amboseli area outside of the national park. Guides provided us with all the time we wanted to see everything. Service is impeccable. You get your steps in from the restaurant/bar/reception to your tent. They have a local watering hole that attracts all kinds of wildlife - we saw elephants, zebras, bucks, fowl, all from the restaurant. The tents have a nice ensuite washroom. Tents, to be honest, are quite dark inside between low lighting/lamps and being amongst trees. They are eco-friendly and do a good job of conservation - hot water comes from solar panels. Flying is very convenient with Amboseli airport within 30 minutes. 2.5 hour drive to Emali SGR. They offer a very nice Masai village experience - less expensive and more "local" feel than Masai Mara.

We had a lovely time, the camp was very nice, great staff. Would have like to have more choices of food for the children but it was fine. There weren't as many elephants as we thought would be in Amboseli, we saw more in the Triangle of the Masai Mara. Still, a nice camp, would stay again. Thank you-

Elewana Tortilis camp and Amboseli was the second stop on our safari and where my partner and I decided to elope! We were immediately greeted with refreshing towels and a delicious welcome drink. Candy, Graeme, and Bob were there to greet us and were very accommodating to our elopement requests which we are very grateful for! Prior to arrival I had reached out to Elewana regarding our elopement and they were more than happy to make exceptions for our stay, thank you so much for indulging our request! Our tent was spacious and well furnished, we were very happy to be able to open both suitcases without trouble! Brushing water is provided as well as drinking water. We also made use of the monkey/baboon trunk where we placed our medication and some snacks. We loved the charging stations by the bed! Fans were also provided but we didn't feel the need to use them during the time we went but most (welcome) surprising of all, a hair dryer in the bathroom! We had an issue with our toilet one night but the staff got right on it and fixed it immediately. The view from the dining area and bar is incredible! It was extremely lush during the time we went and the greenery was not something we expected but was a stunning surprise. The food was delicious and we enjoyed the "Taste of Africa" every night. We also loved the wakeup coffee + cookies and I also looked forward to the afternoon tea cake that changed daily. The service here was exceptional and provided a very intimate and high-end experience. The bush breakfast the perfect way to relax and enjoy the beautiful Mount Kilimanjaro. Complete with a full delicious breakfast set up, hand washing station, omelette chef, and we enjoyed seeing our server Chris as well. Our driver, John was informative, a great driver, and very understanding of what kind of location we wanted for our simple ceremony, we were able to scout out some potential locations and he also showed us where the sundowner would take place. He was patient while we took photos and while friendly, was not intrusive. After our ceremony we headed to the sundowner where we saw our server Chris there with a table of snacks and drinks. The view atop of the hill during sunset was spectacular. Chris took care of our party of 4 during our time there and he was attentive and professional! While we were enjoying our snacks, a group of Masai appeared suddenly and performed a wonderful dance in which we participated in! We want to give tremendous thanks to the camp team for providing us with this incredible surprise as well as the congratulatory champagne that awaited us in our room! The entire stay felt so personable from the handwritten notes in the tent to the acknowledgment of our elopement. We are so glad that we chose to elope here and we will never forget our time at Elewana Tortilis Camp! Thank you again!

Tortilis Camp was the first stop on our Kenya safari. On our game drive / transfer from the airstrip, our driver got stuck in the mud, which took some time to clear, and we arrived in the camp only late after dark. The management and its team at arrival made an extra effort to make us feel comfortable, and settle into the Private House, which was much appreciated. The Private House is a 2-bed-/bathroom house with a central lounge, which is very nicely laid out and decorated indeed. It has beautiful views over the plain and to the mountain. It is very generously sized, spotless clean with a shower sized to dance in, and perfect for a family or small group travelling together. Game drives were perfectly organized with a competent guide. The bush breakfast was exceptional, as was the hilltop sundowner, to a level not seen again in other lodges visited. Amboseli is known for its elephants, and we had spectacular encounters with a number of herds and individual animals, but there is so much more to see and experience here. The quality and service in the restaurant is exceptional, with a very nice list of wines included, and the view is beautiful. The only slightly negative point was the waiter after departure breakfast requesting an additional tip, although we had already “filled” their central tip box quite generously and above Elewana recommendation. We would certainly recommend this camp to anyone looking for a 5-star safari experience in Amboseli.

We travelled here with some family friends and we enjoyed two wonderful days and nights with Tortilis. Zed, Graham and Candy welcomed us on arrival and Chris looked after us at meal times. Solomon was our guide, we loved his company and he was very patient with the young kids in our group. The food was tasty and colorful and the kids loved the afternoon tea and cake options and the pancakes at breakfast. Stunning views here of Kilimanjaro - if you lived there, it certainly wouldn't get old waking up to a majestic view like that. We really appreciated the surprise bush breakfast under the Tortilis tree, just outside the park. Many thanks to this camp for hosting us so well.

We stayed at tortilis for two nights including newyear’s eve. We had the best time ever. The tents are beautiful, the food is excellent, the staff is amazing. They know your name from the moment you arrive and pay a lot of attention to personal service. Small handwritten notes in your tent, a gift for everyone, a water bottle with your name on it…. The park with many parades of elephants is impressive and the view from the bar and restaurant on the Kilimanjaro is one we willl never forget.

The most incredible place! We stayed here for four nights as part of our honeymoon. For two people with self-proclaimed very high standards, Tortilis exceeded all expectations. Everything was exceptional - the food, the setting, the game drives, our ranger (Patrick), the General Managers Graeme & Candy who would make you feel like you were coming home after every drive, the service was flawless, the views of Kilimanjaro are unbeatable. I could go on...... cannot recommend this place enough. It was the highlight of our trip!!

We highly recommend the Elewana Tortilas Camp. The warmth of the people at the Lodge and the animals at Amboseli. Staying at Amboseli was one of my favorite memories of our trip. All of the superlatives are true! The wonderful Lodge hosts Graham and Candy and their staff will warm your heart. Prior to leaving for our trip I checked out the reviews on Trip Advisor and I was a bit skeptical about all the raves, but honestly, the experience in Amboseli won’t disappoint. Our guide, Martin, helped us site amazing animals and we were able to see the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro with herds of beautiful elephants in the foreground. Donald, our server, felt like an old soul we had known forever. All of the main areas are gorgeous and the casual and yet upscale design of our tents and the lodge are inspiring. Tented glamping and coffee delivered while it is still dark out before our morning game drive. Just a wonderful Lodge run by a great team.
