As others have said, getting here is a bit tricky, and I wouldn't say it's ''in the heart'' of anywhere. You have to walk a lot to get to places, and if you don't speak Chinese navigating your way around can be a bit confusing. In terms of the hostel itself, the room was fine, bathrooms were fine, and yes it was quite clean. However, the staff were not friendly or helpful in the slightest, which I believe is an essential part of any good hostel. For that reason I rate it as average and no higher. If you don't mind about staff or location, then just sleeping and showering here is okay :) And it's very cheap which is a plus.

I wasn't impressed with this particular hostel, to be honest. After experiencing how good hostels can be in Xi'an and Chengdu, this was a bit of a let down. First, a horrible location. You have to either get a taxi or find your way through slums to a centre of town. Which could be an authentic experience in itself, though. Secondly, the rooms aren't great. The staff didn't speak much English, unfortunately. They were nice though and tried to be helpful.

Stayed at this hostel for 4 nights and felt like it was the real China - not the glitzy high end shopping mall city. It's down on the Yangtze River waterfront surrounded by local street markets and an almost constant movement of warehouse imports/ exports on the street by porters ferrying the goods up and down steep steps. Firstly. I would not recommend if you don't like steps because this area has lots although you can avoid some by using the bus. Second. The directions to the hostel are indeed confusing and need to be updated as you can now exit the station by Exit 8 and avoid the street for part of the way. Basically however you are heading for the big orange bridge on the riverfront. The staff are friendly ( thanks Daniel and Jasmine for including me in the local hotpot restaurant excursion) and there are lots of tips on where to go in Chongqing. I did the Dazu day trip - the caves were amazing - the rest of the tour was a bit average but met some interesting Chinese tourists which was fun, and also went to Hechuan on my own to see the old fort ( well worth it). Stayed in a 4 bed dorm for 3 nights - noisy with the street outside but clean and airy and then one night in the 6 bed - quieter but more stuffy. I found Chongqing has lots to offer if you let it - and this location is the real deal - despite the air quality.

Location - as others have said, slightly difficult to find. Taxi driver wasn't sure even with the map provided. We paid 20rmb for taxi from jangkou metro. The driver started at 30 so we thought it was a good deal, but prob wasn't. We weren't sure it was the right hostel as the big sign says 'travelling with hostel' however I was able to recognise the archway which confirmed correct location. Once we got in, service was excellent, from sorting out the minor issue with room price to them phoning to confirm our cruise pier and boat, even though we didn't book it through them!! Food was a good standard, beware the hotpot is VERY spicy! Room was a private double en suite. It was extremely noisy due to sky train but they provide earplugs and we slept well partly due to a very comfy bed and pillows. Cleanliness of hostel is a good standard, there was always someone cleaning. Hostel is next to river rather than in centre so be prepared for steep walk up to the nearest metro. It's just under a ten min walk to the Carrefour, which is worth a visit rather than visiting the supermarket close to hostel. The big map on the wall next to reception was really helpful. Whilst we didn't venture into town at night, during the day it felt we were in the more local part of chongqing rather commercial part, which we liked. Surprised by other reviews saying the service isn't good as every member of staff was really friendly and always helpful. Overall, good hostel if you are getting on a cruise.

We had a nice stay in this hostel in Downtown Chongqing. The staff is really friendly and speaks a decent amount of English, so they will be able to help you with any requests for your further travels. The communal area is nicely decorated and they have also a pooltable. You can get some Western and Chinese food. The dormroom we had was rather small but clean enough and the bathrooms where correct. The room was a bit worn out but still correct and it can get a bit noisy like most hostels in China. If you decide to stay here be prepared to walk a lot during your stay. To get here from Caiyunba Main train/Bus station, take bus 503 or take the subway to Xiaoshizi. The bus will drop you around 200 meters from the hostel. The metro you´ll have to walk for 15 minutes direction riverside, It´s next to the big orange bridge. The good thing about the location is that there are a few things not so far away from the hostel. The Huguang guild hall is right next doors, U can walk to the Chiatianmen Square to see the impressive skyline and see the Jialing river and the Yangthze river merge together and the cable car is about 15 to 20 minutes walking distance from the hostel. Chongqing can look super poluted and scary but don´t be scared to wander around and you´ll discover lots of interesting places in this Urban Jungle and people are really friendly in this town.

Folk may tell you Chongqing is one of the most gross metropolises on the planet. Maybe something in that; yet I find this: Chongqing has bags of character in various places (where Beijing & Shanghai are sadly lacking). This hostel is a great hotpot example. Locals call it the Mountain City (it's not) and there are a lot of confusing alleyway steps down to the riverside to reach this happy hostel. The girls Daisy, Jasmine, Victoria(Toria) are so welcoming and fun. There's a lovely open common area/cafe (excellent well-priced food), a great mix of folk in this nexus, a wee not great yet fun pool table through the creaky swing doors underlooking a big orange bridge across the third longest river in the world. What's not to like. Many good things about this place. Number 503 bus 200m along the way will transport you to Caiyuanba Main Train Station/Long Distance Bus beside, and eliminate the many steps (not Huangshan, but significant enough with luggage) - otherwise you can get up to Xiaoshizi Metro station in 15/20 mins or so. The Metro can take you along red Line1 to Lianglukou Station, wherefrom it's a strange almost Russian/Kievian Underground big delve of an escalator (Y2) down to the stations. If going to Chengdu or other fast train destinations (check China Trains: very user-friendly site) they leave from North Station. Not difficult: the Metro is efficient and usually not too crowded. Connects fine with one change of line at most. I too, having had a push-me-pull-you gasping experience in Buenos Aires Metro, am - if not anxious, a tad wary of these dungeonish harum-skarums around the world. Having been on many systems in China now, no fear. Pretty straightforward buying tickets, locating train & connection & stop (on-train English advice: "To avoid clipping, please do not touch doors before opened"). I guess pickpockets are poss anywhere, but crach-craghing before one spits heavily, Qingdao belly ballooning underneath disgusting rolled-up-to-the-oxters stripy sweatshirts: more likely traits than focus on your stuff. Oh, and another great thing about this hostel: normally the mattresses in China are like the backbone of a stegosaurus; here they are more like sleeping on the gently wheezing flanks of a cuddly triceratops. Chongqing I reckon is commonly viewed as a huge unavoidable staging post for 3 Gorges. It's not just a necessary evil. Not saying I wanna stay here forever and a day. I came upriver from the Gorges' end at Fengjie (in itself a friendly enough dot on the rivermap that turns out to be more than the pop of 13 European countries). They can comfortably arrange the more conventional W-E way here at this hostel without ripping you off methinks, with reasonable English, what is feasible. To go to Dazu (wonderful caves a la Longmen, Yungang, Mogao) is fine on your own; but these folks guide you in the right happy direction with no pretension. When you want to go to Chengdu, you do. But you're sorry to leave. Many many places of sorrow in this sad old world. This hostel is not one of them.

In a very interesting position and in a well converted old wooden building next to the Huguang Guild Hall and beside the Yangtze. It sits below a colossal new bridge that spans the whole of central Chongqing. The food and ambience here are great, the tour services tailored to the Chinese and definitely not recommended. The trendy City area is close but through a big noisy road tunnel, but it is all part of the, very interesting for us, Chongqing experience. Unusual, laid back and with the best bed and pillows we experienced in China, this could be considered as a restful option in a very intense, but fun to explore, city.

Because it is a tip in the lonely planet, we definitely expected too much. One of our beds was directly under the AC. It wasn't possible to sleep there and they couldn't offer any other options. the room and floors are smelly and it wasn't really clean. the stuff was ok. the only good thing is the location.

The lady we spoke to was really helpful. She offered us water as soon as we sat down. She showed us several options for the Yangtze River cruise and there was no hard sell. She gave frank and honest advice. She let us leave our belongings in the store room even though we didn't stay in the hostel, and walked us to the bus.

I don't normally take the time to write bad reviews, but I strongly feel like there are much better places to stay. I understand that bad experiences are often an anomaly, so I'll attempt to state facts and leave out subjectiveness. I arrived in Chongqing after a delayed flight. I managed to get to the hostel after the taxi driver dropped me at the wrong location after I showered him the address listed on the website. When I arrived, I was greeted with a very pissed off and rude man at reception. I understand that it was 5am and he wants to sleep, and I understand '24 hour reception' is open to interpretation, but the level of rudeness (I can speak conversational Mandarin) is unacceptable, even in China. This guy would not even let me stand in the reception area while I look for somewhere else to stay and literally shoved me out the door when he didn't want to check me in. However, this was a blessing in disguise. Approximately five minutes walk is a great hostel called Sunrise, which is also part of the YHA organization. Sunrise Hostel was the second best hostel I've stayed in in China. The people here spoke great English and were extremely helpful. Sunrise hostel is where you should stay, if you want friendly, clean, and affordable rooms in a great location. I sincerely suggest you do not stay with Yangtze River YHA. Look up Sunrise Youth Hostel and head there. Trust me, you won't regret it.
