Nestled on a peaceful hillside, Quinta da Bela Vista offers travelers a tranquil retreat with its stunning views and pristinely kept grounds that guests consistently commend for cleanliness. The hotel's amenities, including the inviting pool, lush gardens, and sumptuous food, are often highlighted by reviewers. While opinions on value vary, many guests appreciate the spacious rooms with garden vistas, despite some noting a need for updates. The friendly and helpful service is a standout feature, although some visitors suggest the atmosphere could benefit from a touch more vibrancy.

This was the first time we had been to Madeira and wanted somewhere "special" to celebrate a big birthday. We made a great choice. The hotel is set in a residential area on the outskirts of Funchal; a minibus service operates from the hotel into Funchal and there are plenty of local buses too. The hotel is based around a 19th century Quinta, which now houses a restaurant, and management offices. The bedrooms are in a more modern building, but very sympathetically designed with high ceilings fireplaces and beautiful staircases. The building is full of antiques and has a great range of lounges and cosy nooks in which to quietly sit and read. The rooms are comfortable and come in a range of styles (and prices). Housekeeping was efficient, though I would have preferred a duvet to sheets and blankets, plus I would expect a hotel of this standard to have a choice of pillows these I found thin and uncomfortable. There are three dining options, the a la carte restaurant in the Quinta, a Table D'Hote restaurant, mainly used by those on a half board package, and the Pool Snack Bar which, despite it's name, had a good variety of meals. The food was excellent and clearly the ingredients of a high standard. Outside there are extensive grounds in which to wander, as well as a heated pool, though for me, the water in February was still too cold, though other guests were using it. A significant feature of the hotel is the staff themselves.Front of house, waiting and service staff, including the gardeners, are friendly and helpful; okay, so a couple of the breakfast waiters could have cracked a smile, but you get the idea. Is the hotel perfect? Of course not, but then one suspects neither are Claridge's or the Waldorf Astoria, but it is a lovely place with great staff, and we'd happily reurn again.

Hotel's Favorite
Unless "Frank Widsor" "PC Fancy Smith" or "Emergency Ward 10" are instantly recognisable to you then you are probably of age too young to fully appreciate and enjoy a stay in this quintissentially and unashamedly old world charm hotel which sits in luscious and beautiful gardens in the hills above Funchal. Here the pace of life is testament to Einstein's theory that "all time is relative". Nothing moves fast here, except the staff for whom the needs and expectations of the guests are met with exceptional courtesy and efficiency. Nothing is too much trouble for them to ensure that your stay will be most enjoyable from start to finish. The buildings are akin to a country manor house in the Cotswolds, with paintings and fine china dispalyed in cabinets throughtout the hotel and the adjoining "old house". The library in the old house is a haven of tranquillity for those of us who relish books not Kindles. Dinner is a set four course meal, unless you choose to be regally entterained with an a la carte extravaganza in the private dining room in the old house. Altough it may be a set four course meal its quality is superb..every night. But, as I indicated above, it is the staff who are the stars of the show, not the buildings. Led by the oustanding Hilario ( the maitre d') you will be literally waited on hand and foot by the quiet, unassuming, Sonia or the effervescent and vivacious Carina. Ah Carina ! She bubbles like champagne with an ever present smile as she glides around the dining room. If you are lucky you might bump into Hercule Poirot on the stairs or Professor Plum deep in conversation with Colonel Mustard in the library. Have you got the picture..I hope I have summed it up.

The hotel is excellent and the staff are the warmest and most welcoming you could wish for. Madeira itself is a walkers paradise with routes for all abilities and tastes. Cuisine is of the highest standard and the island produces fruit and vegetables galore. So much so that half of them were previously unknown to us! Thank you Madeira for a wonderful holiday.

Beautiful setting in gardens high above Funchal. Spacious spotless double room, excellent maintenance by chambermaids . Bed comfortable although very high for my 5’ tall travelling companion. Great choice at breakfast. All evening meal options disappointed: a la carte fairly expensive, unchanging menu, and dishes not very tasty. Table d’hote included flavourless marrow and chewy fish. Waiting staff all very pleasant. Stay here for old fashioned service and ambiance but eat out. Note to any guests with mobility issues: steps into main building and between lobby and dining room have no handrail, and paths around the garden are composed of crazy paving so not completely smooth. Won’t be issues for most able bodied individuals.

A truly wonderful hotel. Beautiful surroundings and excellent value for money. The rooms are spacious, comfortable and spotlessly clean. The food is excellent and the staff first class. Dinner was a delight and the waiting staff make each night an experience to remember. Will definitely be coming back. Particular thanks go to Carina and Magda.

We 3 were allocated 2 rooms 129 & 130 near reception & could always hear voices as people turned up or needed to speak to reception even at night. Rooms were supposed to be garden views, these 4, (128-131) are not, the view is of the road & turning circle for taxis & shuttles. Our room had a dirty minibar stained brown & clearly not cleaned, the bathroom smelt, it took days to discover it was the loo brush in putrid water in its holder, both health hazards. Mould on French door. Overall the room was tired & definitely not 5 star. We should have been given what we paid for ie rooms in the Garden room annexe, there were hardly any visitors when we were there, they have 89 rooms after all. Hotel was recommended by ILE/Broadway travel, poor choice, It's location is a long way from Funchal. Dinner is between 7.30pm & 10pm, but nothing to do afterwards nearby due to its location. Dining room looks very nice but few diners, only 6 of us in there which rose to 15 eventually, lacked atmosphere. Breakfast was good, evening meal was a set menu, pity there was no choice of menu as with other Quintas, staff friendly & helpful especially Sonia, Laurena, Mikaella & Maitre D Hilario. Large gardens mainly trees which shaded the pool area after 4pm, after which difficult to find a sunny spot. Rear of hotel has direct late afternoon sun on it but cannot be accessed. Pool was cold, the General Manager disagreed & said it was heated to 24c, it was not! Inadequate small 4 table bar area with piano for pre dinner drinks for guests. In no way is this Quinta a boutique hotel nor luxury as described in various publications including best hotel awards, take those with a pinch of salt. We cannot recommend this hotel based on our experience, apart from dining room staff.

Service was very attentive - very friendly staff who go out of their way, and comfortable beds. However, overall the hotel is jaded. We found the lack of inside hotel bar/lounge/ hangout area to be dissappointing, (there is a little sunroom area by the pool and a room on the 1st floor, but no service and no atmosphere in the latter). The place could be easily improved with some simple improvements - a coat of paint, dinning room could be improved by reducing the stark lighting and adding a few candles, and making the first floor lounge more of a destination. It's definitely not a 5 star experience.

Our third visit to this most relaxing hotel set on the hillside above Funchal. Standards of accommodation and service are consistently high, all staff are so very friendly and helpful. Comfortable bed, good shower, spotlessly clean. Add the beautiful gardens, lovely pool area with excellent bar serving really good food, beautiful views over the bay - perfect holiday! The hotel has a courtesy bus to town on weekdays or just ask reception and within a few minutes a taxi will arrive. Funchal is a lively town, plenty of places for a good meal and always easy to find a taxi for the return trip. We stayed again over New Year, watching the firework display from the hotel garden is just amazing!

good and bad points of this hotel. Yes the beds and pillows are very comfortable and the staff certainly make this hotel a decent stay........However the ambiance is non plussed. There is nothing to do unless you grab a taxi into Funchal yes there is a courtesy bus but not on a weekends and you have to inform the desk what time you would like to go. You have to inform the desk if you want to use the gym or Jacuzzi, ou have to inform the staff if you want to use the tennis courts. ;-( I sent a letter to the manager giving him some tips on better use of the lounge area which just looked like an old peoples waiting room, no one used this room in the whole time we were there ( two weeks) the food in the hotel is very good and the staff are very good too. We decided not to eat the second week and went into town instead which seems a waste of money as it was included in the price but it was we needed to do to get out, there is nothing to do after the days relaxation , the pool bar is the only option but closes at 5 o clock the cocktail bar opens at 7 o'clock and after your meal there is nothing and no-where to go. I put all this in the letter to the manager who ignored my request to have a chat when he had read it but then chose not to. I am not saying that I was going to turn it into a Butlins retreat but people were happy to chat to other folk regarding their days activities but this could only be done whilst you were eating your meal !!! it needed a hub or a little happy hour in-between the dinner setting and afterwards perhaps for a coffee. A pack of cards or a game of backgammon or chess in the lounge, its a shame because it has good staff but clearly no atmosphere at all. I would go back but the atmosphere resembles an old peeps home and not a holiday atmosphere. Also the wine in the hotel was very expensive 34 euros per bottle or less if you don't want a decent one. Even bottles water was almost 5 euros. I don't want this to be a moan but it needs to be looked at to make people feel comfortable and in a holiday mood.
