Hotel's Favorite
I stayed in Castlegar for the first time recently and was very pleased at the service provided by the Sandman Hotel staff. After the first night, I had to request a firmer bed (I'm not a spring chicken anymore) and they immediately moved me to an upgraded room that was perfect. The iron didn't work well and a staff member delivered a brand new one in minutes. I was billed incorrectly and it has been rectified after a quick call. These types of inconveniences happen everywhere but how staff deal with them is what counts. Kudos to the hotel for providing stellar service.

Room dated but bed ok. What blows me away with this hotel is, other than a crappy continental breakfast, there is no food and beverage available on site. There looks to be a kitchen, restaurant and bar but they are permanently closed. I have to believe the business would be there if they were open, especially for a hotel this size. There are minimal other dining options within walking distance. This alone would prevent me staying again.

Had to stay here for a night for business. Happy it was just one night. Now the pro's was the bed and bedding was very comfortable, very soft bed (which I like) and there is a small fridge in room. The rest of everything I would say is a con. 4pm check in's are a joke, thick carpet that smells in the rooms, a lot of sketchy people in the parking area having tailgates with the doors jammed open (accessible to anyone/not keys only), no where to potty your dog without going a ways especially if your dog is particular for grass. Tiny old towels, the furniture in the room had dark stains all over them, ancient garage sale style couches I wouldn't touch if you paid me. It would be better to just throw them out and have enmpty space. The staff was nice, but I would def look around more before staying here again, and I would never stay more than a night or two out of necessity.

Thank you for your comments we are happy you enjoyed your room. We appologize that other guests were not being courteous in regards to the security doors and chose to prop them open. We do have walking paths very close to the hotel and several pet friendly parks in the area. We are doing a renovation shortly in our rooms and hope you will decide to give us another try when you are in the area.

This is our go to place when we visit family in Castlegar . Lovely rooms, fresh and clean, and the most comfortable beds. At times we bring our 2 small dogs. The pet friendly rooms, are just as nice as the rest of the hotel. Helpful staff, highly recommend staying here.

I stayed at the Sandman for three nights and was very disappointed by the stay. It seems that customer service doesn't exist at this hotel and that there is no concern about how old the hotel room is getting! I paid $7 for the breakfast the first morning and was appalled at the state of the breakfast. The coffee pot was empty, the fridge with the juice boxes was locked, the fruit was rotten, there was frozen french toast and waffles and refrigerated hard boiled eggs (I was not sure how long they had been there for?) I tried to buy a water bottle several times and the vending machines were both empty through my entire stay. When I told the front desk, I was told to go to the Shoppers across the street. The hotel rooms facing the pool are very strange. The room stinks strongly of chlorine and we could hear people in the pool late at night. Every time I would turn on the shower, the taps would make a loud screeching noise. There is no housekeeping in your room at all either throughout the stay. I would recommend staying at any other hotel!

Not impressed with check in. Arrived at 2 and advised that room not ready as check in was at 4. No attempt to check if housekeeping was close to completing or another room. Was advised we would be phoned when room ready. Returned shortly after 4 with another clerk. No phone call was made. No greeting, no apology, no eye contact. Very indifferent but room was ready. Room was very old and dark. Bathroom has not been updated since the 70's. The good part was the beds were great with good linens. There was coffee maker, fridge, microwave and a couple of plates. Would not stay here again until there is a refresh of the property.

Thank you MissyGryphon for your comments. I am disappointed to hear that our Front Desk team were not very accommodating and lacked follow-up. I would definately appreciate being able to discuss this with you directly if you could call me directly at the hotel. On the positive side I am glad you found our beds comfortable. We are having an upgrade in our rooms this year and would definately like to have you come back and let us know how we are doing.

The beds were firm and comfortable, but the pillows left a lot to be desired. The room was very clean, the staff was friendly and welcoming even when we showed up after 11pm. The hotel is huge and the location is great. This was an overnight trip on the way to our final destination, but we would stay here again for sure. We'd just bring our own pillows next time.

We usually stay in Trail with friends on the way out to Cranbrook BC 2 x a year for therapy appointments in Jaffray and Cranbrook after driving out from Kelowna BC on the Sunday to break up the drive and make it a shorter 2 hr (3 hrs to Jaffray) drive on the Monday morning as it is a 6/7 hour drive out for us. We stay the Sunday/Friday night with them. Due to a few of their neighbors bring scared of Covid May 2020, and one across the street eye view to their house my dad and I stayed in at this Sandman in Castlegar the Sunday night coming out and the Friday night return from Cranbrook as it is our halfway point. He was tired after his last appointment so it was overnight in Castlegar again. We were given 2 key cards at the front desk to 114 on the Sunday night for $98 ($106) taxes in through my dads Expedia account Room 114 (2 oversized Double beds) faces the main street going through Castlegar and the parking lot. It was too loud for my dad. We fixed this by closing the blinds. Castlegar is only a 3.5 hour drive for us. This was May 17 and 22 2021 The return trip through Castlegar for $83 the return Friday night we were back on 1st floor and got Room 157 (another 2 double room) which faced the pool/hot tub courtyard this time and had a sliding door going into the pool area. We liked the pool on the way there but on the return it was freezing! And liked we could access our 1st floor poolside hotel room through a sliding door by the 2nd bed in 157. We also liked that 114 was right across the hall from the door going into the pool area. We want to return as this Sandman was the cheapest in Castlegar on Expedia again but was sold out for our dates this fall when we needed a hotel overnight in Castlegar for our return trip Friday Aug 30. We are staying at the Super 8 in Castlegar as they had rooms available for our return trip through Castlegar.

There are limited hotel options when staying in Castlegar but whatever you do, don't stay here. We had four rooms rented for a family event in town. Here are some of the issues we found: 1. The rooms didn't have any soap. None. They did provide a bottle of hand sanitizer but they ran out of soap for the entire hotel. 2. Pillows. They are the biggest, lumpiest pillows I have ever slept on. Sore necks for everyone. 3. I think they must have had a sale on 30 watt light bulbs. The entire place has poor lighting. Especially, the bathrooms. 4. The hot tub was full of sand. It looked like someone bathed a Sheepdog in it. 5. Our room was above the back door exit where everyone goes out to smoke and drink. I opened our window and politely asked them to be quiet as it was past midnight. They responded with an FU. Nice folks! 6. Bring earplugs. The air conditioner kicks in every 30 mimutes and it sounds like a lawn mower. 7. My cousin had a room facing the inner courtyard where the pool and the sheepdog bath are located. We walked into the room and were knocked out by the smell of chlorine and the humidity from the pool makes it additionally unpleasant. So in short, try another hotel.
