San Francisco, California130 contributions73 helpful votesWe spent three nights at the Bahia Blanca. It was the only opportunity that I found to see the non tourist version of the Dominican Republic.
The hotel has large clean and comfortable rooms. Some updating would be good, but for the bargain price of $35 US per day it's a small discomfort. The rooms and all the large balconies have phenomenal views. The third floor is best for both views and airiness.
The food is pretty good, with breakfasts being better than dinners. Try La Orchida and Estrella's, which are both nearby.
There are wonderful beaches on both sides of the hotel. On the west side of the hotel an enterprising gentleman has chairs and lounges available at no charge. Just buy some drinks and snacks.
There are definitely some negatives. The owner is somewhat dour, and treats her staff badly, so the overall attitude is helpful but not cheerful. The other negative is that Dominicans party noisily and late on weekends. I left sleep quality blank because it's very bad Friday and Saturday nights and very good on the others.
If it matters to you there are ceiling fans but no AC. Also the electricity tends to go out in the daytime if the usage is high. The hotel has a generator, so it doesn't stay off very long.

This hotel is very simple and had never gone under renovation, but the spot is so perfect that you really forget that this place is in need new furniture and new paint. We had a very good sleep there as the hotel is right on the sea and you hear the wave (so calming...) This place is the opposite of an all inclusive and at least you stay close to the domincans in this really charming fishermans town. At the hotel you have a nice beach and you are minutes away from the best beaches of DR out the crowed and overpriced Punta Cana & Co's. The experience is worth 2-3 nights. The owners are from Quebec and all wanting to help you.

There is a reason this tired old hotel gets so much return business. It's a GREAT hotel with a perfect location. Sleep with the sun set you can see from bed. You can hear the waves from both sides of your room. Wake to a wonderful breakfast n the shuffle down the stairs to the beach.
There is a man on the beach that will provide you with a lounge chair and cook you a wonderful lunch of fresh fish for lunch.
There is no better feeling of getting away than this.
Also
Five nights and breakfasts came to less then one nights stay in Boston.
Great gem of a hotel
My favorite hideaway

Not very good for the $80US a night. No hot water for days! I went with a friend who booked the room. We spent 3 nights. There was at least 5 dead cockroaches on the floor and a dead cicadid. The back walkway light was shining in the window all night. I asked maintenance to turn it off. He didn't know where the switch was, said the hotel is under renovation. Poor excuses.

We spend four nights here.
It's true what they say about the rooms. They are showing their age. And true enough, they could be cleaner.
The service was good. Altough the owner was the only one who could speak english.
But with the wiews like that, who cares!!! No better place to start or to finish your day than your own piece of private balcony with a spectacular wiew. Not to mention the stars at night. Takes your breath away!
there are two nice small beaches right next to the hotel. And playa caleton ( beautiful small beach ) just 1km from the hotel. And with gua guas you can get to playa grande in just 10 minutes.
The two main restaurants ( orchidea & estrella ) are close by and serve good fish and chicken dishes.
And the best part about rio san juan is that there's Hardly no turists. Almoust just you and the locals. Perfect!!

I have been a regular guest at the Bahia Blanca for over 20 years...It is, quite simply, one of my favourite places in the world..It emanates an almost old world charm...It could have been built in the 1930s...Wonderful terraces...the best sunsets...friendly staff and owners...and, the beaches..One a small protected bay backing onto the Gri-Gri lagoon and heronry... The other long and lovely and tourist free...No glitz, just peace and lapping waves..

Recently spent 2 nights at the Bahia Blanca Hotel in Rio San Juan, visited here four years ago and the place has not changed much, some fresh paint is evident and the ambiance remains. Perched on the cliff between 2 beaches it is a perfect romantic setting, with terrific views of the Atlantic crashing in. The French Canadian woman and her husband still run the place with a small staff of locals. The couple, in there 80s run a tight ship, housekeeping is efficient, the restaurant is very good and service is above average. The place is a little weathered though, maintenance has been neglected and the rooms especially the bathrooms are in need of repair, my shower was barely working but had hot water but little pressure, the beds are average at best in a large room, no tv, no wifi on room only in public area. I recommend this place to the seasoned traveller who understands that conditions are not always perfect. For less than $30 US this is an experience I would highly recommend, the setting is priceless

Nice small hotel. Clean room, shower. Friendly owners. As minus: WiFi only on lobby, it is not so comfortable. But rest is nice.
About transportation, from Santiago or Santo Domingo by taxi will cost you 4000 DP (~100 USD) +/-
2 beaches with white sand and palms is 20 meters from side

Just as the previous reviewers said- place is in a spectacular location. Quiet, beautiful, clean, and in general wholesome. Whether you want a couple's get-away or a family vacation you will find it here. The hotel is on a small beach which is perfect for swimming and when it's not rainy thou can even get some decent snorkeling in right out from the shore. The owner is very helpful and accommodating and has spent many years in the area so has very good knowledge of surroundings. Well be back as soon as possible.

this quiet and cozy small 3 storey hotel is just east of cabarete.for less than $40 you can enjoy a room right on the ocean.third floors are the best for me.the view is great.a beach on both sides.also more beaches in the area can be reached by moto-concho.staying here is like having your own private villa.i have been here twice and it has never been crowded.if you like peace and quiet at super price this is the best i have ever found.great for a romantic getaway as there are no tv but my room had a kingsize bed.its located in a small town or rio san juan.there a few bars and restaurants but this is not geared for tourists.so if you want action forget it.3 or 4 days might be enough unless you really want quiet.there is a lagoon that is interesting and nearby beaches.there is a big golf course near but i dont know anything about it.i have been almost everywhere in this country and this place is a must see if only for one day and night.the room is worth 10 times what they charge.what have you got to lose. a real hidden jem.there are photos on the internet of the hotel.check it out.
