Beautifully renovated self-catering and bed & breakfast accommodation on a working dairy farm in the heart of Normandy. Ideally placed for the ferry ports and for discovering all that this beautiful region has to offer. Our accommodation is flexible depending on the season and we can accommodate families and groups of up to 15 people. A well-behaved pet is welcome in our ground floor area only by prior arrangement. We are a working farm and as such you will experience sights, sounds and sometimes smells of the countryside during your stay. We produce a range of yoghurts on the farm, in addition to milk and cream and our products are available to purchase on-site. We are located within easy reach of the Normandy D-Day beaches, the historical city of Caen, the Ouistreham ferry port and the beautiful towns of Bayeaux, Deauville and Falaise. The Mont-St-Michel is about 1.5 hours away. The train service from Caen to Paris is a 2-hour journey. We look forward to meeting you!

We had to cancel our family trip because of the coronavirus outbreak and were pretty devastated. Kate, the owner of La Vieille Abbaye was incredibly responsive and offered us alternate dates at a reduced price. She went above and beyond to make this work for us and we are very grateful and looking forward to re-planning this trip for June, 2021. Highly recommend this owner for her honesty and generosity of spirit.

We liked staying at La Vieille Abbaye so much on our first visit, we stayed there again. The accommodation is extremely comfortable and spacious, beautifully furnished. Breakfast is a delight with yogurt and milk from the dairy. We requested dinner on both nights and were given delicious meals on both occasions. Kate is a charming hostess and nothing is too much trouble. We look forward to staying there again. Very convenient for the Portsmouth - Caen ferry.

Our family of 5 stayed here for two nights on our France vacation. The family suite had plenty of room and was very comfortable for us. The breakfast was delicious, especially the yogurt made on the farm! We also ordered homemade pizza from out hostess on our arrival night and would definitely recommend it. My kids loved the animals and my husband and I enjoyed talking without hostess. Wish we could have stayed longer!

Back in France again and our journey back from the south to Cherbourg, meant La Vieille Abbaye was perfect, allowing us 1.5 hours to the ferry the next day. This time we stayed in the Luxury Suite which again allowed us as a family of 5 to be together. After a very long journey we arrived around 7pm and were greeted by Lesley who showed us to our room. We had prebooked homemade pizzas, which Lesley recommended we settled in first and to come down to the dining room in an hour. Perfect. A chance to wind down and unpack, grab a coffee. The room was absolutely gorgeous with a beautiful 4 poster and 3 z beds for the children and there was still more than enough room for us all. The bathroom was amazing and huge. Lovely slipper bath and walk in shower. Lovely kitchen too. The table was beautifully laid for dinner. Pizzas were huge and very tasty. We had two and that was ample for us 5. One margueita and one ham, mushroom and cream (from the farmhouse). Lovely bottle of rose and juice for the children. Yet again, cutlery, plates, cups for the children which is a real bonus. We ate with another family which was lovely and whilst you are on the same table we were at opposite ends. A great nights sleep (so peaceful) followed by a superb breakfast cooked by Kate, including an omelette and yoghurts made at the farm, as well as cereals, croissants etc.... Another great stopover and one we will continue to use as a family. Thank you Kate for another lovely stay! Note - your sat nav will take you to the village and not to your actual destination. I'd recommend you get directions form Kate prior to your visit as despite this being our third visit we still got lost in a relatively small village 😄!!

Stayed in the converted barn for a week with my son and daughter-in-law and my two grandchildren (5 and 3). It was a huge five bedroom rustic stone building which had been lovingly converted into a perfect family space. It had been lovingly decorated by Kate to the perfect level of French shabby chic which meant it was comfortable and beautiful but you weren't afraid to let the children touch anything. Absolutely everything was provided in the kitchen, dining rooms and sitting rooms. So many holiday lets have six of everything and no more. Here the space felt lived in with plenty of everything. My bedroom was huge containing a double and three single beds and so pretty. The en-suites all worked beautifully which is great in France! The outside was lovely being a working dairy farm, surrounded by animals and peace and quiet. We faced the stables and watched the comings and goings of the horses where the children were given a riding lesson by Louella. What a delightful young lady who later took us on a guided tour of the dairy. The children fed ducks, geese chickens and horses and had great fun. There was a great play barn with again lots of things for the children to do and an outside play area. The location was good for exploring the Normandy beaches and soaking up the French countryside.

We spent one night here on our way to Brittany with our 2 children who are 2 1/2 and 6 months old.At first the house was a little difficult to locate, but eventually we found it!The house itself is beautiful.Kate the owner was so friendly. Room:We stayed in the family suite which was on the top floor. It was huge.It had the shabby chic look to it which I loved. There was a double bed,two singles,a toddler bed and a cot,a bathroom and an extra little mezzanine room with sofas, toys, microwave, kettle etc. There is a stair gate for if you have little ones moving around. There are 2 large fans too for if it gets too warm. Things to do:There are stables with lots of horses, goats and chickens and a family dog and cats. There are ride on cars and tractors,a huge trampoline, football and goal, swings, slide and board games for indoors.Enough to do! Breakfast:was continental which was lovely. We sat in our own breakfast room. There were many cereals, croissants, pain au chocolate, yoghurts, jam, honey, juices and Kate the owner makes fresh tea or coffee.Set us up nicely for the day. Places to eat:There wasn't anywhere close to eat closely so we ended up going to a town called Thury Harcourt which wasn't far away.It was really nice.We went to a Pizzeria.Couldnt go wrong really! Overall, the Vielle Abbaye is a great place to stay, especially if you have children! We would definitely go back! The price is great too!If you want to stay near Caen or are passing through to go somewhere else,we would recommend staying here!

We booked the whole place - 5 en-suite bedrooms for 6 of us. Enough space in each of the 'suites' to be on your own and a lovely open plan sitting room/kitchen/dining area for us all to come together. There was plenty of everything, linens, towels, well stocked kitchen etc. Kate (the owner) was so welcoming and encouraged us to use as much of the outdoor space as we wanted - feeding the chickens, ducks, gees, horses, goats was great fun too. The photos on the website just don't do the place justice - it's huge!! Each of the upstairs bedrooms were so spacious and with every home comfort. Massively recommend this place!!!

Lovely rural "real farm" location handy enough to Caen and the ferry terminal. Excellent (huge) room (self-catering, ensuite, luxurious) with meals served in an equally cavernous ding area with a roaring fire. Friendly welcome, good food and excellent accommodation. As mentioned this is a real working farm, so "city folk" should be aware that means animals (very cute goats and chickens, not to mention some lovely ponies or forget Dottie the Schnauzer) and associated farm equipment (well-separated from the B&B itself). Be aware your tyres might get a speck of muck on them! Free wifi provided and a large television with even a few channels in English (for a change). Huge outdoor spaces for use in good weather as well. Very satisfied in every way.

We booked the whole place (5 rooms) for a family week end reunion. Each room has its own bathroom (shower or bathtube) and a queen size bed as well as a si single bed. The common area (living room) is really nice with couches, chairs and a old style fireplace. We can either cooked by yourslef or ask to the management to prepare a meal for you. During our week end, we couldn't have access to the breakfast or meal because the management was busy with a horse competition.... Free access to wifi.

Response from KateL1905, Propriétaire at La Vieille Abbaye
Responded Jun 20, 2019
Just to say that we are always very happy to provide catering services but these MUST be reserved in advance as all meals are prepared using fresh and local ingredients. In this case, with no prior notice, we were unable to offer this service due to a sporting commitment with our daughters. We apologise for the inconvenience on this occasion.

We were looking for a stopover on our way to the Charante Maritime and needed a bed and breakfast that could sleep a family of 5. Not an easy task, as most only offer a room for 4. We stumbled upon this place and realised that this could easily accomodate us. Our room had a large double bed, two single beds, a cot and a cot bed and still had easily more than enough room to accommodate two travel cots for our twins plus space to move around. Beautifully decorated and furnished (the beds were a dream to sleep on) with the added bonus of an eating area just outside the room with some settees, table and chairs and a fridge. To get to the room was via some very steep steps which whilst it had a stair gate, my two little ones were not far off getting over this and think this should be made higher, otherwise small children would not be able to ue this space. We were greeted by Kate who was absolutley lovely and made us feel very welcome. We opted for the children's tea which consisted of pasta, tomato sauce, cheese, ham, bread and butter and a lovely pudding and fruit. Kate thoughtfully arranges this early, so you can then take advantage of her fabulous cooking for the adults evening meal. We were staying with our friends who had the other B&B room and we ate in the dining room which had transformed from the children's tea time to a lovely table dressed with candles for the grown ups! The food was fantastic as was the wine and the breakfast the next day was a feast of lovely farm produce and french pastries. Kate had highchairs for my twins, appropriate cutlery and tableware for all 5 children and brought us copious amounts of tea, coffee and hot chocolate to set us off for our long journey for our main holiday destination. We also had arranged to stay here for our stopover on the way back and when our ferry was cancelled due to bad weather and we needed an extra early start for the Euro Tunnel, Kate arranged for us to have breakfast at 7.00am. A lovely place ideally located as a stopover for the Charante Maritime region and a lovely host who was extremely accommodating. Would recommend.

It was a pleasure to look after you. We will of course look into raising the height of the stair gate. This is the first time that this point has been raised so rest assured that it will be addressed.
