Interesting place and the views from the top (don’t worry there’s an elevator!) were spectacular on a clear day.
It tells the story of the Voortrekkers who were the South African pioneers.
Go on a clear day for the best experience.
Handy hint, the reception and ticket desk is hidden away to the right at the bottom of the steps. We missed it and on an insanely hot day, got to the top of the steps without a ticket (foolishly thinking the ticket desk was at the entrance) then had to back down and inevitably back up again.

What a pleasant surprise. We went as family for a picnic and game drive. The roads are well marked and the picnic area is neat and clean. The restrooms at the picnic spot could be better but other than that I cannot fault the reserve. The cheetahs gave us a spectacular show with them just lying next to the road and we could probably get within 20meters from them.

The Union Buildings is always impressive to see. Sadly ordinary visitors are not allowed anymore in the buildings. The gardens are looking well , but dry for this time in winter.Various monuments are there to be seen. Please note gardens are closed on weekends.

We did the animal encounter with the Lion walks. I really enjoyed it. The Crew is soo friendly, from stepping in and the last step I felt so welcomed. The Lion walks stood out, its scary at the beginning but enjoyable as it goes. Love it Love Horse Back definitely going back for more.

The whole area of Hazelwood is great - someone said "like Cape town in Pretoria". That's not being fair - Hazelwood is very much a vibrant part of Pretoria. Great restaurants, coffee shops and places to hang out!
You won't find an area like this in Johannesburg.

Great hiking trail with great scenery. The place is brilliant to visit.

Down size are the random people on the trail with speakers and Los music.

All round the place is great and I shall be back

The good. The bad. The ugly.
    The good.
    Animals. Five stars.
Wife and I visited this week. Animal species represented are a vast number. So many to see. Beautifully laid out exhibits with animals from around the world. Enclosure with Eland is so impressive.
    The bad.
    Staff. Two stars.
    Unfriendly. Not welcoming.
    The ugly.
    Food. 0 stars.
What you served was garbage. Absolute crap.
We ordered chicken sandwich and Chicken legs with fries.
Chicken sandwich. Blah. Dry. Old product.
    Fries. Tasteless. Soft. Disgusting.
Chicken legs. Dry. Stunk. Old product.
    Stop serving this garbage.
Johannesburg Zoo Food is superb, in comparison.
Rated Zoo 4 stars because of animal collection and display. Had to take 1 star off for mediocre staff and trash you serve as food.

A great hiking place! Entrance is R100 but as 2 young ladies hiking we never felt unsafe! There are different hikes to do and much to see - we did the 5km one in about 2 and a half hours. The hike is relatively easy with some spots requiring good leg strength! There is a little restaurant on the property as well and their pricing is good. Bathrooms are available. The drive there is simple enough with a GPS and does require you to take a short dirt road. Cars with lower clearance / that are not 4x4’s will make it - there is also adequate parking space. I definitely recommend going to visit if you’re wanting to experience a nice hike. You do go between the bush as well so it’s not all just flat. The cable car thing is fun to ride - make sure to bring something for the operator who stands there all day helping you use it.

Prepare to be impressed by the huge statue of Nelson Mandela standing with open arms, Just below the Union Buildings in the stunning gardens.

Gets quite busy and there are the unusal "official photogrpahers" trying to sell their wares. But wait a while and the crowds clear so you have time to run up and get a snap at the feet of the great man.

Kindness Corporation an NPO runs a Youth Leadership Programme annually and on June 16th we do something special with the group. They had been learning about being entrepreneurs. Who better to use an example than Sammy himself! Joining the group was Jean Bwawa from the Righ2live foundation that looks after the interests of foreign nationals in the johannesburg area. He found a map on the wall showing where the different african tribes were from and used it to explain that Africa is a quagmire when it comes to migration and who originally comes from where! This was totally unexpected and a welcome surprise. The group enjoyed the background stories about the family and mentioned that they are rather privileged to have an actual relationship with their parents! There was one rather knee jerking surprise when visiting one of the upstairs room, there was a clean knocking sound from the wardrobe! We almost had heart attacks! It was explained that it was the plumbing that sometimes makes a noise. The group enjoyed the gardens and the aviary very much. Very much a gem and this venue can be used to relate to many themes for young people. Highly recommended.
