Visit the Maine Center of Contemporary Art to start. Then visit visit the Rockland/Farnsworth Museum....and top it off with a visit to Colby College. Colby has one of the outstanding art museums in the country.....an hour and a half away.....it is well worth the visit.

The CMCA has moved from its cozy location in Rockport to a stunning new location in Rockland, making Rockland the art mecca of coastal Maine. I have to begin by stating that I loved the old location- the old church right on the harbor in Rockport was old, worn and inviting. The new place isn't that at all. I have to admit that I walked away after the opening on June 26th thinking, "what have they done?" The change is just so enormous. But, I kept thinking about it and stewing over the whole experience and I realized that the musuem had accomplished what it set out to do- Isn't art, after all, meant to provoke, annoy and get you thinking about what in the world it all means? This new space isn't cozy like the Rockport space, but it is inviting. In fact, everything about it invites the visitor inside. The curved potted plants along Winter Street lead the passerby right to the museum and the large courtyard welcomes you to enter. Some of the art iself is actually visible from the street. So, cozy it is not, but despite all the angles, steel and glass it does beckon you inside. Some of the art is installed directly on the walls, creating huge murals but also leading one to wonder about the permanence of the art, but perhaps that's the point. Other works are computerized and still others are massive sulptures similar to the one in the courtyard. This is not the classic Maine coastal art you might be used to. That is the art I am most comfortable with, but, on reflection, I am grateful for the chance to get out of my comfort zone, question some assumptions and perhaps grow as an art lover. Thanks for provoking me! Bravo!

While Rockport is a tiny seaside town, the Center ) CMCA) is no small town place. Beautifully installed exhibits light up the walls, the staff is friendly and you can browse at your leisure.

The center/museum is a great place to see some interesting contemporary Maine art. Very nice venue for receptions where there are opportunities to meet some of the artists.

CMCA is in a temporary location right now (the 162 Russell address is the former address, which is for sale and vacant now), but once we found it we enjoyed the current group show, "Floating." The center also has an interesting gift shop with items made by local artists.

The gallery is in the process of moving to Rockland, just down the coast, so if you try to find it in Rockport village you will be disappointed. The building is for sale.

One would not expect "contemporary art" to be much produced or on display in Maine, because the state is mostly known for iconic representational and regionalist art. And so this Center is an unexpected and welcome jewel to the mid-coast Maine art scene. It is small, but excellent. Mostly known to showcase Maine contemporary artists, with periodic special exhibitions. The museum is moving into a brand new facility in Rockland in 2016, so be aware of this when planning your visit in the future.

The exhibits we have seen here are always interesting and thought provoking, This is not common Maine art but if you like contemporary do not miss it. They are building a big new museum in Rockland - we will be sad to see this historic building abandoned.
