- Emily W2 contributionsQuick (cheap) FUN dog sled rides- perfect for small kidsWhoa, this place was a trip FAVORITE! The building and race memorabilia was nice, but the BEST part is the dog sled ride. It was an affordable family option, the ride was short (but cheap) and FUN! The handler was very personable and answered all of our questions about the dogs, sled, race and problems. Perfect for small kids to get the experience.Visited June 2023Traveled with familyWritten June 15, 2023
- Louann G4 contributionsBest day ever!!!Absolutely the best part of my Alaska trip!! Doing the dog race sled ride was amazing. Riley has a great team of dogs!!! The ride was more than what I expected. It is something I will treasure for the rest of my life!!!Visited July 2023Traveled with friendsWritten July 11, 2023
- Emily W2 contributionsHighlight of my trip!We drove to the Iditerod Headquarters from Hatcher Pass. We wnjoyed the gift shop, but our favorite part was the dog cart rides! For $10, you can ride in a wheeled cart pulled by a team of 10 sled dogs! It was the highlight of our whole trip! Highly recommend Dark Horse Dogsled!Visited July 2023Traveled with familyWritten July 11, 2023

We got to ride a four person dogsled, 10.00 per person. It was fantastic and exhilarating. A must do!!!Visited July 2023Traveled with friendsWritten July 24, 2023

The $10.00 cost per person for the cart ride being pulled by an Iditarod race team was great. It's amazing how fast they can go in such a short distance, my husband's hat had to be retrieved.Visited August 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten February 1, 2024

This museum was incredible. It does not look anything too special from the outside. A wooden cabin / shop and outside an area where the dogs do dog runs ($10 per person).
Once inside you enter through the gift shop. The museum itself is free and that is what we found fascinating. We are completely new and naive to Iditarod. The museum and video really brought us to to speed on the history, the importance and dedication to the race. It is quite incredible.
You should take the time to read the material as it is very insightful. The gift shop has loads of merchandise to do with Iditarod past and present. It can be expensive but as expected and given the museum is free it kind of balances out. When we were there the dogs were not available but we still had a great time as we learned so much and were literally taken back by the dedication of the Iditarod participants. Well worth a visit.

Stopped by on our way to Anchorage on a cold wet day. The museum was very interesting with a nice gift shop. We purchased tickets for the dog cart ride. The ride, although short, was fun. You could feel how much power those dogs have and could see how much they love doing it. Cuddling the puppies was the perfect ending. Great place, check it out!

We looked up this little museum on the internet, and we were very surprised at how much information there was to absorb about dog racing, especially the Iditarod. we watched the in-house movie that helps set the tone for the memorabilia found in the museum. Best part??? Getting to "work the dogs" during a ride around the property. Our musher is part of the Iditarod history that still holds a major event every year in Alaska. We will definitely revisit this place when we make our way back to Alaska.

This was on our list of things to do when we visited. They were giving sled dog rides with a wheeled vehicle and 10 dogs for $10 per person. It was a short ride, but made the stop worthwhile. There is a museum area with a video to watch, and a gift shop. This is great for families, or anyone interested in the Iditarod.

Amazing place. Iditarod obviously has amazing history so going here was a must. The doggos are soooooo amazing.
We got there really close to closing time, and the person in the museum/gift shop told us to go to the dogs first ( which was nice of them). We did a sled ride around the space, it was $10 per person. And then we got to meet and pet a few of the dogs (you can't touch every dog, they will tell you which ones you're allowed to). We met Ruby (she so cute with her big round eyes) , Tang and Cookie. They were all so amazing, we don't deserve such amazing animals!!
Will tell you it's a little smelly there, just a heads up.
Staff was really nice.

This is a nice place to learn about the race, the movie is very interesting, and the gift shop is nice. It was very disappointing that there were not dogs. When I asked about seeing some sheld dogs I was given a list of places to call and they could not tell me how far they would be or how much, We really wanted to see some dogs.

This was a pretty quick stop for us. We walked around the room and learned a bit about it. I wish the video was running, that may have been interesting. We did do the dog sled ride, it's quick at $10pp, but still my son enjoyed it which was the goal.

Do you need to book up to do the sledge ride or is it a queue up on the day kind of thing? If so is there a best time to plan to arrive so as to miss the tourist buses people have mentioned in the reviews?

No reason to book anything ahead of time at the Iditarod Headquarters. There was no wait for the sled rides, but I would recommend looking into some area kennels. We loved 17th-Dog yard (Alaska Mushing School). Very personalized tour and Matt Failor is an incredible host.
Are there any of the sled
dogs here to see?

Yes, but only in the Summer “Tourist Season”. Not sure when it starts but Labor Day is the unofficial/official end. You could just call the museum; too.

We want to stop here on our way to Seward. Is there RV parking?

This is the complete opposite direction on the way to Seward… You will need to drive north for about an hour to go see Headquarters then turn around and head back to Anchorage, only then to head down to Sewarrd. From Anchorage plan about 70 to 80 miles round trip. If you’re on your way to Denali Park then this is enroute.
Yes there is RV parking.

For the past few years, Gov. Bill Walker has been stealing half our PFD. Are you allowing him to use part of it for his pleasure? He has been John Bakers iditaridor. Is Bill Walker using part of our PFD money for his enjoyment? Since I saw him as John Bakers iditaridor, during the Ceremonial start, that is why me and many others quit donate to the Iditarod.

You are asking a political question I have no answer for, you might want a different platform. Just having moved here, I am not aware of the political problems.

I have a troop of Girl scouts who would like to do the "Dog Mushing badge". We want to stop by the headquarters on Sept 17. What are your hours?
camper70
Cumberland, MD61 contributions
They are open daily 8a.m. to 7 p.m. until mid September. The number is 907-376-5155 ext .108. I'm sure they would try to help your Troop. The girls can watch a short film about the race and see a replica mushers cabin. The gentleman who did our tour has been a dog musher and so was his father.
