- Steven SPattaya, Thailand754 contributionsExcellent public transport hubI had taken the HSR from Taipei to HSR Taichung. The HSR connects with the TRA and local MRT. I've been blown away with the public transport in Taipei and Taichung. Everything has been so well planned out. I used the HSR hub for the MRT to and from my hotel and to visit attractions. Also, bus connections to other destinations like Lukang and Sun Moon Lake. The Tourist Info desk was so helpful in providing me up to date transport info. I wish every train station I walked in to was as modernised and efficient as this one.Visited October 2023Traveled soloWritten October 23, 2023
- Dilys QSingapore, Singapore187 contributionsWell equipped and wide variety of food optionsTaichung HSR is clean, easy to navigate and has a wide variety of food options. Clear signages are available in English. If the seating area in the station is insufficient, there is plenty of seats right outside the station as well. The toilets are sufficiently clean too.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 23, 2023
- Travelove5811,338 contributionsNice station, comfortable trains, great locals....Unlike major cities like Taipei & Kaohsiung, take note that the THSR going to Taichung DO not stop at Taichung City Centre but instead at a different THSR station - away from the city centre itself. You need to connect to the local train from here to go to city centre ( Taichung Station) , which is 4 stops away ( about 20 mins). The THSR trains are comfortable, clean & have some nice shops. It is easy to navigate this train station as it is not that big. The station staff are very friendly & always so helpful, if you ever need their help. Or you can ask any locals. The many locals we met throughout our trip in various cities/ situations are all so nice, so friendly & so helpful.Visited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 17, 2024

A quick and easy way to travel from north to south (and vice versa) of taiwan. There is economy and business class, the latter offering “free” drinks and snacks, and electrical charging

We took the train from Taipei to Taichung for a day trip to experience the High Speed Rail. On the way there we managed to get reserved seats, but heading back to Taipei there weren't any available so we had to fight with the hordes in the unreserved carriages. Taichung Station itself is quite modern and efficient, but located a long way from the town centre.

Using the HSR will save you alot of time on travelling. However do check the trains going to Taichung some are faster then the others due to the stops they make. Some HSR trains make more stops while others only make certain stops thus its faster.
Advise to purchase the tickets online so that you are ensure the the time and seats. However no worries if you decide to cancel or change the time. Just go to the counter you can exchange or cancel the tickets but all these must be done prior to the scheduled date and time

Took it from Taipei sdn got to Taichung in under 1 hour!
For people who plans to travel around Taiwan (West coast), the HSR is one of your must use. At the same time, do take note of the discount for early birds!

It's not first time taking High Speed, but wanna share here because I feel the people working here are really nice and they are really good to take train on time. They don't delay even 1min unless there is something wrong.. but when I come here for my business trip always taking train from north to south and from south to north.. I strongly recommend this speed system who are coming to Taiwan.

The HSR in Taiwan is fast and reliable and clean to travel on. It stops at all the major cities along the route.

This is one of the bigger HSR station and well equipped with eateries, pastries shops, restaurants, etc. Lots of place to sit down to rest or get a bite while waiting for the trains.

Since I came to Taiwan, I took high speed train several times. Compared with Japanese Shinkansen, it is cheaper, but practical and comfortable. Taichung high speed train station is a little bit far from Taichung station, but easily accessible by train. At this Station, there are several restaurants, fast food, coffee shop etc. Even you go earlier, you don’t feel bored.

The Fast Speed Railway Station is not in the downtown but southwest of it. You have to take bus, taxi or drive or walk there. Nevertheless, it is quite easy to get there and Taichung buses do not charge for the first 10km.
高鐵站不在市中心,而是在西南方向。你必須乘坐公共汽車,出租車或步行或開車到那裡。 不過,到達那裡很方便,台中巴士前10公里不收費。
The station got everything you want and quite a clean and nice station. There are few good restaurants in the station. We used the station to ride to Chiayi and back on the same day.

I’m planning to head to Taiwan late December to early jan 2024.
Am thinking of catching the hsr from Taipei to Kaohsiung on 31 Dec. Since it’s New Year’s Eve, am wondering if it’ll be crazy crowded to catch a train even in the morning? There’ll be 10 of us, including a 75yo and 2 children.
Just wondering if it’s a bad idea to be taking the train then.

Can you bring food and drink on board the train? Do the seats have a foldable table behind it similar to airplane seats? Thank You

Yes you can bring food on board. Not like flying low cost airlines.
We have plan to go to taichung from taipei.. what are the transportations we can use?
And how much time each transportation?

I’m not sure if you still need this information.
In Taiwan, it depends on how much money you are willing to spend. If you don’t care about money. THSR must always be your first choice.
It is convenient and will save you much time.
If you get on a THSR, which only has three stops, it will take less than one hour from Taipei to Taichung! Buses are the cheapest,
and takes about two hours to get to Taichung without traffic jam.
Train is one choice, but you had better book beforehand if you want to have a seat. It takes about two hours and you don’t need to worry about traffic jam.
Hope my answer helps you!

We plan to go to taiwan from taichung via HSR. May i ask the time of departure? How do we reserve slot? And how much? Thanks

Hi, I booked the tickets online through Klook or Kkday. They issued me a voucher which I could exchange for a ticket on that day. It does not have a specific time slot so I could choose whichever time slot I wanted upon exchange. There are several trains so time of departure depends on what time you choose.

Yes, it is two different names for the same high speed train. Excellent, and an essential part of every visitor to Taiwan's 'must experience.'
Enjoy!
How much the ticket from xinwuri going taoyuan

Depending on departure time, avoid peak time will be cheaper.

I would like to pre-purchase HSR tickets online before arriving in Taiwan, but it seems that online bookings must be picked up in Taiwan within 2 days of booking, which seems to make it impossible to pre-purchase more than 2 dates before I arrive.
Is that correct? Seems strange, and I wonder if I have misunderstood.
Also, is there a luggage storage facility in HSR stations?
Thanks for any advice.

Hello. We were considering pre-purchasing our HSR tickets until a friend in Taipei told us it really isn’t necessary, as the trains run so frequently that as long as you arrive at the station 1 to 2 hours ahead of time, you can buy the tickets (including return tickets) at the station. The ticket office staff are very helpful and will assist you in selecting the right trains with plenty of seats. Make sure you buy “business” seats as they are very comfortable and inexpensive for tourists. From memory, there are storage lockers for hire at the station. There is also storage available above your seat on the HSR train. I hope this helps and enjoy your train ride.

How do I take the Hsr to Taichung from Táoyuán airport terminal? I am planning to collect the pocket wifi from Táoyuán airport but I am not sure which terminal is near to the HSR?
Also I saw that I need to take a shuttle bus to go to Táoyuán HSR. How Long will it take from the airport to the HSR station? How much is the fee?
What will be the opening hour of the shops at Táoyuán HSR station? (Sorry for asking many questions here because my flight reaches Táoyuán airport around 6am. Not sure if the shops are available).

From the international terminal, you can take the shuttle from the basement. The shuttle cost NT$30 per person and it takes about 15 to 20 minutes to reach the HSR station. Have exact change. The bus starts at 6.15 at 15 to 30 minutes intervals. The earliest train south is at around 6.49 and the intervals is about 15 minutes to 30 minutes apart. I cannot remember the fare but it's about 500 to 600. You may wish to pay about 20 more to be assigned a seat. You can check the fare and the time table at the HSR website. Have a nice trip.

Are tickets generally available for each train without pre-purchasing?
Mukesh K

Yes, no problem - simply go the counter and buy the tickets. However, exceptions could be holiday period, wedding season or exhibition.
The staff at the high speed train station speak english. The train frequency is very good. Very well managed and very systematic.
