We had a lovely and safe experience on the boats. There was a lot to see in the swamp area, which is unexpectedly large and eventually washes into the sea, if followed all the way down. We recommend going 1-2 hours before sunset, as the birds come to roost in the mangrove trees, which provides a good opportunity to see them.

We had the opportunity to see flocks of the national bird of Trinidad and Tobago, the Red Ibis. Lots of blue heron and white stork. Even a tree snake or two.

We were taken for about 2 hours, including the time taken to go to and from each site.

The flight of the scarlet ibis overhead to roost for the night is spectacular. Beyond that the swamp is pleasant but there is not a lot of other wildlife. Nice way to get away from the busy city into a quiet place. The boats have a guide who is adequate. You just need to arrive at the ramp at the correct time.
We decided to do it at the very last minute and found a lovely man, Stephen Broadbridge who was willing to pick us up from our abode and take us to the ramp. He is a naturalist but honestly I would hire him for a more exotic adventure. That said he did take wonderful photos and shared them with us.

At the edge of the Caroni Swamp in central Trinidad, my family and I boarded a pirogue near dusk. The animals provided quite a show and the tour guide was knowledgeable. We said Caiman, snakes, crabs, and the resplendent scarlet ibis returning home to nest. A must see

Easy ride from Port of Spain. They run boat tours only. Public and private tours available. There office is open from 2:30 to 6:00 daily. You will take a boat through the very well developed mangroves and see different birds and animals. The highlight is watching the scarlet ibis flocks and flamingoes fly to one area to roust the night. Bring your binoculars and cameras as this is one of the only places in the world that you can find these birds in great numbers.

A really lovely way to spend time in Trinidad. The Caroni Swamp is a spectacle and well worth it. We did the tour as part of a group and spent a fabulous couple of hours touring the mangroves and eventually seeing the spectacle of the Scarlett Ibis returning to roost. Photos don't do it justice.

I took a boat tour of the Caroni Swamp Bird Sanctuary. The swamp is surrounded by red mangroves and the guide pointed out many of the animals. Among the highlights were a tree boa, Caribbean Flamingos, and a flock of scarlet ibises returning to their nests. The scarlet ibis is one of the national birds of Trinidad. It's very peaceful when the boatman shuts off the motor and ties the boat to a pole in the water. We sit and watch as the birds fly above us.

We observed the largest numbers of scarley ibuses and flamingoes that I have ever seen. The y return to the swamp in the late afternoon to roost for the night. Our captain maintained quite a distance from the birds which made them a bit hard to see nd photograph. To his credit, we did not disturb them.

This was a very fun excursion! We went from our cruise ship, so the logistics of getting to the Caroni Swamp was all handled for us (yay!). We did not see the big flocks of the scarlet ibis that you see in the brochures, but given that they return to this area in the evening - at the same time as the mosquitos(!), I was fine with only seeing a few. :) But we also saw flocks of pink flamingos, boas hanging from the trees, Cayman crocodiles, a tiny anteater, and more egrets and other birds to count. It was really fun!

Highly recommend!!! You’re sure to see Flamingos, Egrets and the Scarlet Ibis among other things. Once we got through the mangrove and came out in the open area in the flat bottom boat there was an island full of birds and more flocking in!
It was amazing to see the Flamingos fly in!!! But all the Scarlet Ibis... WOW!
We got to see a boa & anteater too among with other things. Very reasonable since you are on a boat with about 30 people.

The Trip into the Caroni Swamp is a must do activity for any visitor to Trinidad. My visit was on a picture perfect and clear sky day. The boats are flat bottom and the waters are calm for those who are concerned with sea sickness. I have never seen anyone get sick on these trips. The tour guides are very informative and the birds, mangrove, crabs, and other flora and fauna are to behold. You must go. You will never forget you visit and you will take so many keeper photos on the way.
