About
The Scuola Grande di San Rocco is a lay confraternity founded in 1478. The popularity of the cult of St. Roch, whose remains had been in the possession of the brotherhood since 1485, contributed to the latter’s rapid expansion to the extent of it becoming the richest Scuola of the city. At that point it was decided to build a new monumental headquarters and engage Tintoretto to decorate it with his most celebrated pictorial cycle, illustrating episodes from the New and Old Testaments. It is the only one of the historic Scuole Grandi to have survived the fall of the republic. It is a unique site, where over 60 paintings are preserved in their original setting in a building that has hardly undergone any alteration since its construction. The confraternity is still active today, carrying out its traditional charitable duties as well as looking after its extraordinary artistic patrimony.

Neighborhood: San Polo
The Rialto Bridge is the most famous sight along the Grand Canal in San Polo, smallest of Venice's six sestieri (districts) and by far the busiest neighborhood. Morning Venetians arrive to peruse the markets for fish, fruit and vegetables, while shops display goods from cheese to wine to desserts. San Silvestro and Rialto Market vaporetto (water taxi) stops add to the steady stream of foot traffic. San Polo is defined by churches including Basilica dei Frari, one of the most important churches sought by art lovers.

Worth an hour of your time
Definetky worth a visit. €10 but worth it. Absolutely breathtaking paintings and the intricacy of how they tell a story is great knowledge. Def use a mirror (at end of hall level one) to see paintings on ceiling and hire audio guide. Wasn’t busy as well so nice relaxed way to spend an hour.

There's a lot of competition but this is up the with Venice's other sights
Interesting slice of Venetian history and crammed full of extraordinary art. The ceiling paintings are incredible (be sure to use the mirrors provided to get a better look) and the wooden carvings around the edge of the main hall are possibly even better. The floor isn't bad either.

    Stunning Scuola
Definitely a highlight of our trip to Venice and should be a “must see” for anyone spending more than two days in the city. (Tintoretto’s painting The Crucifixion is currently being restored, but it is still worth visiting to see everything else. (Tip: use the mirrors in the main room in order to see the incredibly detailed ceiling paintings close up.)

Not a must see but enjoyable
Not a 'must see' but worth seeing if you are spending more than one day in Venice and have already seen the other highlights. This building houses some grand rooms with artworks on the walls and ceilings. There are only two main rooms and a couple of smaller rooms so a visit is typically less than 30 minutes. Pick up a large mirror that is conveniently provided, to more easily view the art on the ceilings without craning your neck!

    Keep Climbing!
This is an incredible place that's not as out of the way as you might think but somehow isn't on the itinerary of a lot of people visiting Venice (I'd been three times and never been before). If you're even remotely interested in the history of Venice itself, this is a must. And keep climbing: there are treasures galore on all three floors. The highlight for us was a wonderful guard named Angelo who clearly loves the place and showed us all sorts of secrets of the remarkable second floor (a doorbell! a peephole!) and told us wonderful stories about Tintoretto and the creation of all that art. If you're going for a visit, spend a little time meandering around the neighborhood as its charming and filled with lovely shops.

    Recommendation
Scuola Grande di San Rocco is spectacular and well worth the visit. This has been my second visit and each time has continued to identify aspects of interest. Opportunity to look at the art of the ceiling through mirrors available to the public increases its uniqueness.

Can’t believe I left it so long before visiting!
There is so much to see in Venice that some places fall through the cracks, no reason why you don’t visit, you just don’t get round to it this trip! Well this Scuola was in that category for me! What a goose to leave something so amazing so long before visiting! We were spellbound and without liking every Tintoretto one had to be impressed by his industry. Overall this is an amazing visit. Do buy the inexpensive guidebook, you will appreciate it so much more! Now to plan for a return visit!

    An absolute must visit!!
Spent time in the Scuola on our first day in Venice, exploring the area we were staying. Absolutely fantastic building, so much to look at and admire. Was reasonably quiet at about 11.00 a.m. in March so got to see everything in detail. Get the leaflets to read about the place. The paintings and ceiling are so beautiful, impressive, stunning, amazing and sad. If that is not enough, you have all the remarkable wood carvings and the lamps, oh what lamps. Some really talented people years ago. Climb up the stairs and find even more to look at, including the preserved finger of St. Andrew?? Well worth an hour or so to be completely blown away.

It seemed that the walls and ceilings were filled with Tintoretto paintings depicting the life of Christ. The grand upper hall was stunning - the ceiling especially. Some compare it to the Sistine Chapel. Lesser known, obviously.

Combine a visit here with the Frari Church, which is just around the corner.

Beautiful place with amazing Tintoretto’s art. Gorgeous building. Calming and relaxing. It took maybe around 45 minutes to go around but was a great museum. Both paintings and sculptures are exquisite - the museum was easy to find and everything about it was fantastic. Probably suitable for adults (or kids extremely keen on art!) because it’s not very “entertaining” or “interactive”, but for an art lover it’s a real treat. It doesn’t make it often to Venice’s “top things to do”, and I don’t know why - it totally should.

An incredible collection of Tintoretto's work. Viewing them in the massive room above the carved wooden figures was literally awesome. Don't miss the relics on the second floor. The ornate containers that hold them are incredible works of art in their own right.

You will never see a more grand achievement than Tintoretto's work. A unified work, from the bottom floors to the grand ceiling, this storytelling in magnificent artwork is a wonder to behold. Make sure to get the literature or take a tour to understand the depth of this masterpiece. Lesser known than the Sistine Chapel but no less wonderful.

The Scuola di San Rocco is a 15th century building built for the lay confraternity dedicated to St. Roch. Tintoretto was hired to paint the walls within this building and for some 20 years, painted 60 scenes from the Old and New Testaments which remain in place today. Start in the ground floor hall, and its two side rooms, before heading upstairs to the Sala dell’Albergo where the Scuola's governing body held its meetings.

This place is so often overlooked but it is worth searching out. It is astonishing to think that Tintoretto created the paintings here in situ - on our visit we had the added bonus of the treasury being open too. There are quite a lot of stairs but it is worth the effort if you can manage it.

The building itself is spectacular and the paintings by Tintoretto just go on and on. They are magnificent. He was born in Venice in 1519 and was a master by the age of 20. The scuola is a great place to stop by if you are in the area. Even if you're not, try to go

Quality over quantity in this unique display.

The decor of art on pretty much every wall was spellbinding. Everything well informed and not too expensive for admission either.

Worth it alone for the main hall, amazing.
