Neighborhood: Montparnasse
The namesake tower of Montparnasse dominates over the landscape but the fun part is the throbbing life that goes on below it. Bright lights, busy cinemas, brasseries and diners encompass hidden museums and parks to entertain the masses. Long avenues lead away from the tower to take you to unsuspecting places and historical monuments and treasures. In between lie adorable ivy-covered houses with beams and small gardens to match. Just a short metro ride away from the center of Paris this neighborhood has something for every hour of the day.

I was in the planning stages of setting up a honeymoon trip for my wife and I. My wife is an artistic and creative person and had recently talked about switching from stencil to watercolor painting (she had little experience with water color painting). After extensive research I reached out to several painting studios to setup a lesson for my wife during our stay in Paris, every studio rejected my inquiry because they taught painting courses over several days not in several hours in one day. Nicolas (owner of Atelier Alupi) was open and receptive to my pleas. Before we continue here is some background on Atelier Alupi / Nicolas. Atelier Alupi offers a variety of painting courses that run for several days to several weeks. They offer summer courses that allow you to paint outside and inside their studio, they also offer (my wife will return for this package) a package where you stay and paint in a French castle outside of Paris for several days. Nicolas comes from a long line of renowned painters, to include his grandfather, who is considered one of the greatest post-Romanian impressionists. Back to my review. I spoke with Nicolas through several emails because I was trying to construct one of those great memories that last a lifetime. Nicolas was open to many of my ideas and flexible to my demands (and they were demands – hahaha). My wife and I ended up meeting him at the Cite de L’architecture at du patrimoine for her private painting lesson (the location was his idea and turned out to be a great museum to pass the time). He spent several patient hours with her, giving her a great foundation for her future painting endeavors. The greatest part of this entire story is that my wife was able to paint a small portrait of the Eiffel Tower as her first water color. Nicolas’s warmth and amazing skills as a teacher created an amazing and life long memory that my wife will cherish. I cannot thank Nicolas enough for everything, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND Nicolas and his studio if your looking for painting lessons while in Paris.

On a trip to Paris, I decided to register for one art class in this art school. It was a great artistic and cultural experience to have the opportunity to enjoy an art course with a French group in Paris. I recommend it to anyone interested in drawing, painting or watercolor.

I just fulfilled my dream of painting in Paris, outside in the beautiful settings of this incredible city.  This 1 week course with Nicholas, introduced 6 different areas of the city, and helped us to see the perspectives we wanted to catch on paper.  We lucked out with gorgeous weather, but we were also prepared for the colder windy days based on his suggested preparations.

A word of advice:  I lugged my acrylic paints from the US, since that is the medium I prefer, but I ended up using watercolors which are better suited to painting outdoors and the limited painting time frame (2.5 hours.)  I plan to recreate these paintings in acrylic when I am back home.

I highly recommend the optional add-on tour features which took me through less-known parts of the city, later in the day.  As a solo traveler, this was an excellent way to schedule a few extra hours and feel even more comfortable in the city.  The guide, Florient, was knowledgeable and fun.

Hope this helps!

I had such an enjoyable time painting 'au plein air' with the group just 5 years ago . Loved the various painting spots, the company of fellow aspiring artists from all around the world , and also the various restaurants we ate at that we wouldn't have known about without Nicholas . I will always remember the experience!

Well. I had no expectations, and really didn't know what I was walking into. But I did know, that I wanted to draw, and be in a chateau in the Loire Valley. That alone was enough to make me go. But. It ended up being so much more. I speak a little french, yet I didn't even really want to speak so much... because everything was so overwhelmingly beautiful. I had a nice little room. In a chateau. And had breakfasts, lunch, and dinner, prepared in the kitchen by someone French. I sat at a charming table with lovely ( I usually think that is a pretentious word, but it's the only fitting adjective I can think of ) people... it was intimate but easy. The days were broken into two parts. Morning drawing and afternoon drawing (or painting). There were lessons, in a couple of languages. It was fun to try to follow the french, but the english actually really helped. It was at my own pace. The teachers were sensitive to what I needed. But there was a nice freedom in finding yourself. There were roosters in the mornings. Vineyards to go for a run in. Sunshine. A friendly, peaceful atmosphere. I still am in touch with some people I met. It was amazing. And ... I mean, really, I might categorize it as magical, but I am an adult. So. Whatever comes closest to that in your interpretation. I stayed for a week... and I wasn't ready to leave. That's the only bad part. You actually have to leave.

A week in the French countryside, a week of French home cooking, a week of immersion in French culture, a week with similarly minded people from all over the world, and a week of drawing and painting ... the prospect was irresistible. And the actuality was beyond expectation. Painting on site included instruction, theory and practice. Painting excursions to Chaumont, Chenonceaux, Villandry and Amboise provided experiences of these historic locations unavailable on any post card tour! The one-on-one instruction is encouraging, non-invasive, and not too dogmatic. Convivial and casual the routine facilitates comradry as we took meals (and cleared away) together, learned and painted together, compared work with one another, and experienced the methods, techniques and caring Atelier Alupi generously provided. I'm sure most stagieres went home as emotionally refreshed as well equipped with new skills and inspiration. Other "painting holidays" might have more luxury or refinements, but none have been so satisfying and personally enlarging. And that's without mentioning the CityScape days in Paris ... five days painting on the streets of Paris with a guiding hand helping make the most of my vision! The date below is because this site wanted a date and didn't include the Julys since 2004 when I first took the train to Amboise (Poce-sur-Cise) and the samples below are intended to show my progress from novice to practiced novice.

The classes I took with Nikolas were some of the most rewarding and comprehensive
art instruction. Going to class was always a joy and no stress environment.

I had the best time taking this class with Atelier Alupi! I took the week long class in and around Paris. Each day we would meet at a new location around Paris and paint, most people used watercolors in the class but I used acrylics. Nicholas is a wonderful teacher and I learned so much. He made everything very easy for us with his planning and attention to detail. I got to see places in Paris that I had not seen before and may not have found on my own. I loved it and really hope to go back again and take more classes!

A wonderful time had by all coming from far and wide to paint... even from a sand bank in the center of the Loire river and its glistening light. Lodged on the grounds of an enchanted Chateau with spectacular views and delicious food and ambiance.
The pleasures of France and the meditative pleasure of painting and jovial ambiance of the particiapants made this a sucessful sejour !

Painting in Paris and at the chateau with Nicholas was most definitely a lifetime highlight! Learning to look, experience different views in Paris, meet others and start a life long journey of painting was so special. I now notice details on buildings, how stairs go up or down and what is on either side, how the water meets the land and the different colours of blue in the sky. I have even been able to teach the 10 year olds in my class and they are grateful that they have started noticing what is around them!
