About
The Marine Museum of the Great Lakes at Kingston's mission is to inspire an enduing connection to the maritime history of Kingston and the Great Lakes. We are located at 53 Yonge St. at Portsmouth Olympic Harbour. Our entrance is beside the entrance to the City Marina Office, facing Lake Ontario. In our temporary, reduced circumstances, we offer FREE individual tours of our gallery of Great Lakes art, artefacts and models. We will be moving back to our National Historic Site at 55 Ontario St later this year where we will offer guided tours of the historic site. Thank you for your continued patronage!

Hadn't been to the museum since we moved away in 2005. Last time, we could visit the museum on our own without a guide. I wanted my grandson to enjoy the history, and see the many scaled ship models. Now, we are held in the front entrance, with a few models, without access, unless a guide is present. Being a Monday, no entrance at all. Made a donation before finding out this restriction, was totally disappointed. I knew the Alexander Henry was gone, should have a smaller replacement as an attraction. Don't think I'll visit this place again.

Leaving one star seems unfair, but I tried to add an edit to the listing. The museum is under extensive renovations so there's not much to see at the moment. I'm looking forward to going back next year to see what they've done!

Genral disrepair, dirty and poorly lit. Spelling mistakes, and the smell of mold. Can't enter the Coast Guard ship because of aspestos contamination. Waste of money.

A generous benefactor has purchased the building and the MMGL will be returning to its original beautiful location at 55 Ontario St, bigger and better than ever. We are all thrilled!!

The Marine Museum has had to move from its original historic dry dock location thanks to the federal government selling the site. Such a shame for them to lose their space and their classic ship has now sailed back to northern Ontario. But you can still get a taste of Kingston;s importance in marine history at its location at the Sailing Club. Worth seeking it out!

Due to complete stupidity (in my opinion) on the part of the City of Kingston the museum property was sold to a developer and the museum is no longer. The Alexander Henry is gone and all the artifacts are in storage at the Portsmouth Olympic Harbour. With luck it will re-open somewhere, but for now, there is no museum.

We arrived at 3:30 not realizing the museum closed at 4:00. It was apparent that we couldn't see it all in that time period so they told us to enjoy what we could and didn't charge us. What we did see was very interesting and we plan to return to see it all.

Well last year on the same weekend when we visited, the Ship was open for touring. We came back mainly because the kids loved the Ship so much. It wasn't until after we'd paid and visited the main building that they told us the ship had been closed early for the season.

This is a museum still not opened. I hope it will be a great source of information and history when it opens fully. When I went there, a couple of friendly staff explained the things about Kingston's naval history. I wish this museum opens soon.

The Marine Museum of the Great Lakes at Kingston is still OPEN year round, but we moved from our original address at 55 Ontario St. when the property was sold. We now have a small gallery at 53 Yonge St., down at Portsmouth Olympic Harbour. Admission is FREE and we are happy to give you a personal tour of the gallery!

This is closed now with no expectation of reopening soon. Too bad, it was a worthwhile place to visit but it was evicted by the new property owner. The artifacts are stored, and the ice breaker is now back in Thunder Bay where it was working originally.
