I would recommend this hiking route. We started at 8.30 am and we have been walking alone. At the end of route there is waterfall and small lake. I took a bath in the lake. It was quite cold. We continued to Caldeirao inferno. On the way back we met a lot of people therefore i recommed start erlier than others.

It was a beautiful walk. The difficulty level is low, the path is very well protected, not recommended for children. We passed through 3 caves, but they are easy to go through, it is advisable to take a flashlight or use the light of the cell phone. As the path is wet, it is necessary to pay attention to the shoes not to slip.

This levada is truly awesome, you get amazing views and you will be walking on the 300m cliffs all the time. You can also continue to Caldeirao Inferno wich is great. You will pass by some beautiful waterfalls and tunnels on your way.

It has everything: Levada, forest, rocks, high mountains, two waterfalls, three tunnels, a path along the edge of the cliff... The tunnels are wet under your feet, and you need a flashlight. Well, or at least a phone. The tunnels are not long, but there is a danger of hitting the vaults or colliding with people coming towards them. Trails along the cliff have a thick metal wire as a fence. The route is long enough, you need to have a supply of water and endurance. There are problems with Parking. Nature is magnificent.

I liked that levada becasue theres a huge waterfall and some smaller waterfalls along the way . It was a fun hike because you go under some waterfalls too and I got soaking wet . There are some tunnels to so you need a torch becasue if you use a torch on your phone you could drop it and I need to sell this phone once i get a new one soon so it cant be smashed . But that levada was real pretty and not dangerous at all like a walk in the woods or at a park

Firstly the car parking. If you put Quaimades car park in Google navigation it may send you to the second smaller free car park which is known as Pico dos Pedras car park. Beware that this is nearly three KM from the start of the actual Levada walk. I guess you don't want to add a boring six k to your 13.5 k walk.
See the photo and put the right car park of the forestry department : Parque Florestal for navigation.
It's really a flat walk with very few steps. There is practically no view for first half and it only opens up after the tunnels. It's walking through green canopy which is lovely but may be monotonous. Many other levadas even the extremely popular 25 Fontes had better views.
Some areas are very narrow. You really don't want to stop and let others pass every two minutes. We went at 2-30 and still had to slow down on several occasions on the way in. On the way out hardly any interpretation and much better experience. You really need to keep your eyes on the path as it'd be very easy to stumble.
The pool as expected is freezing cold. Saw a few birds including the Firecrest.
Big car park with traditional houses, toilets, cafe and lots of cats.
Not bad as an introduction but there are better walks.

Another guided walk arranged with Madeiralimo travel agents. A group of 16 led by our guide Emilka, several nationalities and age groups in our party. The walk starts at height and is fairly flat, the pathways are narrow, uneven with rocks and tree roots and slippery in places so concentration needed. Although an easy walk we witnessed a lady trip over, badly cut and shaken and the emergency services had to come to her assistance. There were a few tunnels so torch required and care needed not to bang your head. The narrow levada follows the whole walk and you could even see trout swimming in the channels. There were some nice views but generally it is woodland with views of the valley. Another great day out 13km in total so a nice workout for my wife and eye :-)

The best hiking trip on Madeira! Not to difficult to walk (not to steep) and such a beautiful nature around! Really had the feeling to be in the jungle in Thailand. The views are surprising you and are changing very regularly. It's not about the Nevada at the end of the hike, but about the whole experience! I'm not used to hike at all, but with some good hiking shoes and my fleshlight of my mobile (have to cross 3 tunnels), it was such an amazing experience!
With all the pictures we took (as unexperienced hiker), it took us about 4h to go & back.
Parking is only € 3 for a full day.

Fantastic walk, amazing nature! It is about 13 km both ways and it is in 98 % flat so quite easy walk, however very narrow in some places. It took us about 3h 40 minutes to complete with stopping to admiring views and taking photos. The waterfall is very impressive. Recommend having good hiking boots and flashlights for the tunnels.

One of the best hiking trails in Madeira. It’s flat and relatively easy to do, but bring appropriate shoes and clothing. The trail usually gets muddy and the caves have water spots every now and then. Took us 4h 30min to complete the hike and enjoy the views of the waterfall. It’s all worth it!

Hello,
How much would a taxi cost from Santana to Parque Florestal das Queimadas?
We would like to do Levada Caldeirao Verde - getting to Santana by bus from Funchal and then taxi to the start of walk.

The trips to the Levadas from our Cruise Ship cost £26 each - would it be better for us to use a local tour company or guide top accomplish this. Thanks.

Just take a taxi to the start of the walk (and ask the driver to come and fetch you 5 hours later). Take a picnic. There is no way you can get lost on the path. You can organise it by yourselves. We didn't meet or get in touch with any guides. Better ask tourist office info.

Can we use public buses to visit this walk? If so , which bus would take us there from Funchal?

Not sure as I hired a car. But it is uphill on a narrow road, I cannot remember seeing any public buses up there. Enough taxis though you could arrange?

Hi we are staying at Funchal . Love your review. We do Munro walking in Scotland so adding this to our bag . Can I ask where is this from Funchal and what is the best mode of transport to get there

Hi,
You may want to try either rent a car and use a maps app to find your way around(it's quite far from Funchal) or book a trip with a guide(better option imo, picks you up from the hotel, drops you at the hotel or wherever you want, support in many languages, etc).
We went with several guide travel agencies for a couple of days but the most enjoyable experience we had with the guys from Flora Travel. See if the guide Pedro is available, that man is real gold.
Enjoy your holiday in Madeira, it's all worth it!
